Good Evening Carpenter Families,

I trust you all had a restful time with family and friends this holiday weekend. It was well needed after such an emotionally charged week. Our hearts go out to the Robb Elementary community with all that they are going through. Below are a few school updates that we wanted to share:

*Security: Safety and security is a top priority for us at Carpenter Elementary. We are so grateful for our secure exterior doors that have a camera and buzzer system at the front of our school. It's wonderful that we can see and communicate with visitors in our camera before we elect to let them enter our school.

Teachers have keys to their classroom doors that they can lock. We also have swipe badges that enable us to gain access when moving from outside into the school building after recess. We are committed to do all we can to keep our students safe.

We practice lockdown drills four times a year and the Cary Police come twice a year to monitor our compliance with drills. They provide feedback concerning our processes and our WCPSS security officer conducts tabletop exercises with office staff that walk us through a variety of situations. We constantly review our processes to consider precautions and safety measures.

*Visitor Procedures: All visitors must check into the office to receive a visitor’s badge. Once a visitor rings our front bell, office staff will be alerted in the office. Through a camera and audio, office staff will consider access to our building by:

  • Asking the purpose for the visit
  • Requesting the visitor’s name
  • Requesting to see a form of identification on camera
  • Requesting that the visitor steps back from the camera to view from the waist up

If a visitor refuses to provide a name, purpose, or identification, or if the staff feels uncomfortable with the interaction, the visitor will be denied access to the building. Once a visitor enters the building, the visitor must sign in through the office to receive a visitor’s badge.

*PTA Meeting: Tomorrow night, May 31st, at 5:00 pm, there will be a PTA Meeting in our Media Center. Please come to help vote on our new PTA Board, vote on the budget, and hear the wonderful ways that the PTA supports our children.

*Meet the Teacher: There will be class lists posted for Track 1’s Meet the Teacher tomorrow night, May 31st, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Come to casually meet your child’s future teacher, take a self-guided tour of the building, pick up a supply list, and see where the pod of classes for your child’s next grade will be located. This event is only for upcoming 1st through 5th grade students.

To reduce traffic within the parking lot and congestion within the building, we are hosting a Meet the Teacher night for each track:

  • May 31st = Track 1 - 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
  • June 21st = Track 2 - 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
  • June 22nd = Track 3 - 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
  • June 23rd = Track 4 - 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

*Free & Reduced Meals: During the last two years, the federal government has paid for school meals to be free for all students. School lunch and breakfast will continue to be free until June 30, 2022. Regular meal prices for next year will be:

  • Breakfast = $1.50
  • Lunch = $3.00

However, families can apply for free and reduced meals for the 2022-2023 school year. Families can apply online here. After applying for this assistance, you will get an anticipated determination immediately. The confirmation number that you receive will help you inquire about your child’s status. Apply today so that your child’s application can be processed before July 1, 2022.

*EOGs: Congratulations to our Track 1 scholars for putting so much effort and concentration into their End of Grade tests. We look forward to seeing our Tracks 2-4 upper grade students apply themselves on their upcoming tests. Here’s the remaining testing schedule:

3rd Grade Math = June 16th

4th & 5th Grade Math = June 17th

3rd Grade Reading & 5th Grade Science = June 21st

4th & 5th Grade Reading = June 22nd

*Virtual Academy: Students that are in our Virtual Academy are expected to come into the school building to take their EOG tests. Please fill out this survey so we can make transportation and other arrangements.

*Moving: Please let us know if you are moving, going to another school, or not returning next school year. You can simply respond to this email to notify us. By letting us know your plans for next year, we can ensure that we do not over or under hire with teachers.

*Rock Climbing: The PTA’s June Spirit Night will be Sunday, June 5th from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Triangle Rock Club of Morrisville. It will cost $15 per climber, which includes 2 hours of climbing, rental harness, and event staff to belay. Sign up online here.

We look forward to seeing many of our Track 1 families through Meet the Teacher, Field Day, and/or 5th grade promotion ceremony this week.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Fay Jones
