 Good Afternoon Carpenter Families,

We trust that you have had an excellent weekend and are counting down to the holidays. We hope that you enjoy quality time with family and friends over winter break. Here are a few school updates that we wanted to share:

*Parent Circles: After being closed to visitors for a number of years, we are excited about starting Parent Circles. Parent Circles build community, strengthen connections and mirror many morning meeting practices that our students participate in. The Circle process is an organized group discussion that invites everyone to share openly when they feel comfortable. This invitational dialogue process builds rapport, strengthens relationships, and bridges differences. Our first Parent Circle will be facilitated at the Kentwood Learning Center on Monday, December 13th, at 6:00 pm. We will begin hosting Parent Circles, in January, at Carpenter.

*Book Fair: It was outstanding to see so many families attend our evening Book Fair event!!! For many families, it was the first time to see their children’s classrooms. Many thanks to everyone that supported our Book Fair by purchasing books. We especially want to thank Jennifer Burge and the PTA for the countless hours they spent decorating, staffing, and stocking the Book Fair with books. Mrs. Alston, our Media Specialist, is so thankful for the way the community came together to fuel literacy and provide such rich resources for all our students. Many thanks to parents that purchased books to fulfill teacher wish lists and donations for students in need.

*Health Changes: Children that are experiencing side effects during the first few days of receiving a COVID-19 vaccination, should stay home until the symptoms cease and it has been 24 hours since they had a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medication). With these side effects, it is not required to present an alternate diagnosis, negative COVID-19 test, or stay home for 10 days in order to return to school. Just send your child’s teacher a note to alert us.

Please review the revised return to school process for students that are in the process of being vaccinated or are vaccinated after being exposed to someone with COVID-19. People do not need to quarantine if they have been fully vaccinated AND do not have any COVID-19 symptoms since being exposed. Fully vaccinated means that it’s been two weeks since the individual received the second dose in a two-dose series, or it’s been at least two weeks since receiving a vaccine that only requires one dose. Proof of vaccination is required to return to school without completing the quarantining requirements.

If people are exposed to someone with COVID-19 before being fully vaccinated, they must quarantine and follow the appropriate requirements to return to school.

*12 Days of Winter: Our Sunshine Committee has put together some spirit days to get us all in the winter mood. It is optional but we would love to have more students participate in these spirit days

*Virtual Academy: Recently, we had to revoke the Virtual Academy seats of several families and require them to return for face-to-face instruction. It is very important for Virtual Academy students to log on and stay engaged for the duration of all classes. Students must complete assignments to earn grades to show progress on standards.

*Parent Engagement Survey: For school improvement purposes, please take the time to fill out this parent survey. Your feedback is invaluable!

*Winter Break: Our last student day before winter break is Wednesday, December 22nd. Carpenter Elementary will be closed starting on Thursday, December 23rd until Monday, January 3rd. Teachers and other staff will not be expected to check email or respond until January 3rd as this is their winter vacation to enjoy with family and friends.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Fay Jones
