Good Morning Carpenter Families,

It’s so wonderful to see our hallways bustling with so many students again!  It seems as though we are settling into a routine and pretty soon it will be time for Track 3 to track out as we welcome back Track 4. Here are a few school updates:

*Picture Day: Picture Day is scheduled for this Thursday, July 22nd, for Tracks 1 & 2 and August 24th for Tracks 3 & 4. There will be Lifetouch forms sent home to order school pictures.

*PTA: We cannot express enough how grateful we are to Carpenter’s Parent Teacher Association. This supportive body of parent volunteers provided a welcome back Chick-fil-A breakfast for the entire staff which consists of eighty people. They provided beginning of the year grants to our teachers for rich educational resources that the school could not independently afford. They also purchased gray polo “Be Like Cary” shirts for our staff. Please support your child’s learning experiences by joining the PTA.

*mClass: The NC Department of Public Instruction has selected not to use Istation as a reading assessment for our students this year. Teachers are currently being trained on how to use the mClass system for literacy assessment and progress monitoring. mClass is an integrated, gold standard literacy system based on the science of reading that offers teacher administered assessment and holistic instruction for elementary students.

*Talking Points: If you haven’t already received an invitation to join Talking Points, your child’s teacher should send one shortly. This multi-lingual communication Application allows parents and teachers to text messages back in forth in chosen languages. This Application pulls parent contact information from Powerschools and we are grateful to have access to it again. You can download the Application or read more about it here.

*Student Information Cards: Ensure that you fill out and return your child’s student information card to your child’s teacher. These student locator cards are kept in the front office to quickly reach parents in the event that your child becomes sick or gets hurt at school.

*School Meals: School meals for breakfast and lunch are provided free at this time. However, please apply online here for reduced and free lunch for when Child Nutrition Services has to charge again as it takes several weeks to process. Let your child’s teacher know if you want a paper application sent home. You can also call 919-588-3535 to get an application mailed to your home. Here is the menu for July.

*BOG: Our third graders are required to take a Beginning of Grade reading test in third grade. Tracks 1-3 will be taking the test on Monday, July 26th. Third graders in Track 4 will take the test On August 16th. Virtual Academy parents, of third graders, need to fill out this short Google form to let us know of their intentions. The form needs to be filled out by August 6th.

*Transportation: The more consistent your child’s transportation is in the afternoons the better it will be. Please communicate any changes in your child’s transportation to your child’s teacher. We must follow your written plan with transportation and not your child’s spoken word.

*Bus: To register for a bus, fill out this request. Questions about the bus can be addressed to our Assistant Principal, Mr. Miller, at 919-462-6780 or nmiller5@wcpss.net

*Carpool: Families that need to secure a carpool number can fill out this form. We will email you the carpool number and send the carpool tag home with your child.

*Checking Students Out Early: If your child has an unavoidable appointment, be sure to check him/her out of the office by 3:15 pm so that it does not interfere with our carpool traffic. Students must be picked up in carpool if they are not picked up prior to 3:15 pm.

*Dismissal: Our carpool system will get quicker as students learn their carpool numbers and get used to the new system. Arrive between 3:45 pm and 4:00 pm in the afternoons to pick up your child. We have many meetings and commitments that start immediately after school. Families that need to make before or afterschool arrangements for childcare, can contact the Taylor YMCA program to pay for this service. Frequently asked questions and information can be accessed here. This information provides where to go, what to know about procedures and policies, drop-off and pick-up information, program highlights, and more. Further questions can be addressed by our YMCA site coordinator – Amanda Grover at Amanda.Grover@ymcatriangle.org.

We look forward to another great week of teaching and learning as our students continue to “Be Like CARY.”

Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Fay Jones
