To All Carpenter Families,

 

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. Sorry for the delay in communication, our main system, Powerschool has been down at the state system. However, we hope everyone is as excited as we are to start the new school year. With heartfelt anticipation, we welcome back 1st through 5th graders on Tracks 1-3 on Thursday, July 8th and Track 4 on Monday, August 2nd. Kindergarten has staggered entry but we look forward to seeing all of these students on Thursday, July 15th for Tracks 1-3 and Monday, August 9th for Track 4. Most students we will see back in the building while some we will see online. Below are some essential points for the start of the school year.

 

*School Hours: Our bell schedule will revert back to 8:45 am to 3:45 pm.  Students can arrive as early as 8:45 am but need to be in their classrooms by 9:15 am when the instructional bell rings. Students will be dismissed at 3:45 pm.

 

*Buses: All upcoming Kindergarten students were registered for a bus upon registration. To register for a bus, fill out this request. The most important thing to do is to inform your child’s teacher about how you want your child sent home. Unless it is in writing from a parent, we cannot change a child’s mode of transportation.

 

*Carpool: Families that want to drive their children to school can easily do so in the mornings but will need a carpool number in the afternoons. The same carpool numbers that students obtained last year will be their carpool numbers for this year. Here is the form to secure a carpool number. 

 

Remember to practice with your child getting in and out of their car seat so that the flow of carpool is not halted with you getting out of the car daily to buckle your child in.

 

Please refrain from having dogs in your personal vehicle during carpool. We did have a dog jump out of a car and bite one of our teachers so please keep all dogs at home as our teacher had to seek medical treatment to get staples in her leg.

 

*Walkers: Families that desire to walk their children home, will need to pick up their children through the cafeteria. Parents will be given a form to fill out upon arrival.

 

*Visitors: Due to the pandemic, we are only authorized to let essential visitors into the building. Essential visitors include parents that need to enter the front office area for behavioral, emotional, and/or health reasons. We hope that as conditions improve, we can return to our open community. In the meantime, parents may access our front office to drop medication off. Rest assured that we will have tons of staff stationed throughout the school to help students find their classrooms throughout opening week.

 

*Teachers: Teachers will be in contact today to welcome families to their classroom communities. There are a few teachers that have not been cleared to start through Human Resources yet. Our 5th grade Track 1 classroom will be started by Mr. Lewis that is currently tracked out. Our 5th grade Track 2 classroom will be started by Mrs. Hogan, one of our favorite substitute teachers. The 3rd grade Track 3 classroom will be split into two groups and served by our Track 1 teachers, Mrs. Ripperger and Mrs. DiCicco. Thank you for your understanding during this transition time.

 

*Meet the Teacher: Teachers will be either be scheduling ten minute Google Meets with families or sending a video about themselves to families. Families are encouraged to make a video telling about themselves to send back to teachers through Flip Grid if teachers decide to make personalized videos.

 

*Masks: All students and staff will wear masks while inside our building, except when eating and drinking. Masks are optional for everyone while outside. Please let your children know if you want them to take their mask off when outside at recess.

 

*Eating and Drinking: On Friday, July 2nd, WCPSS removed all the eating and drinking restrictions for students. Our serving line in the cafeteria will be open and students can once again socialize during lunch. Students will sit next to one another and face one another while eating. Lunch is free for all students again this year.

 

*Water Fountains: Water fountains will remain closed so do send your child to school with a water bottle.

 

*Supplies: Our Supply Lists are located on the front page of our website. They can also be found at this link. Due to our delayed communication, students are not expected to have their supplies until next week.

 

*Staggered Entry: Kindergarten students will only attend school one assigned day during the first five days of school. This way students can learn the Carpenter way in small groups, complete assessments, and learn to navigate directions within their new classroom communities. Your child’s teacher will provide you with your child’s assigned day.

 

*Calendar: Since our students are transitioning back to a multitrack calendar, we wanted to ensure everyone has a copy of it to keep track of the dates. Here is a copy of our calendar.

 

*Purple Days: Note that there are five days this year that are designated as Teacher Workdays for all tracks. These protected days are secured so that our staff may participate in Professional Development. These days are:

 

  • July 30th
  • October 1st
  • November 2nd
  • May 2nd
  • June 30th


*Health Measures: To minimize the spread of COVID-19, we will be following all health measures required by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. All students must stay home when they are sick and wear a face covering when not eating inside. Notify your child’s teacher immediately upon being diagnosed with COVID-19, so we can work with health officials for confidential contact tracing. Together, we can keep our students, staff, and community healthy in a safe and welcoming environment at school.

 

*Virtual Academy: Virtual Academy does not start until August 2nd. However, families may pick up Instructional Materials on Thursday, July 29th, between the hours of 9:30 am and 12:00 pm. Laptops will be available for checkout on this day. 4th and 5th grade Virtual Academy students will be served by Morrisville and Parkside Elementary Schools since we do not have enough students to form one class on our own at Carpenter Elementary.

 

*Technology Devices: We have received a new shipment of Chromebooks. Once we have them all inventoried we will set up a time for parents to check them out.
