Good Afternoon Carpenter Families,

Today we celebrate all the sacrifices that our mothers have made to prioritize their children’s education through this global pandemic. Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best possible education for your children. Below are a few school updates that we wanted to share:

*Teacher Appreciation: Our staff so enjoyed the “Lifting Us Up” National Teacher Appreciation Week. All the sweet treats, snacks for the lounge, gift cards, and words of encouragement were so wonderful. The staff felt the children’s love and support. Please know that sharing your children with us is truly the best gift of all! Thank you.

*PTA’s Boosterthon Campaign: With so many people losing their jobs due to the pandemic, we never expected to meet or exceed the PTA’s fundraising goal for technology this year! Wow, we are incredibly grateful for your support to ensure we have the best technology to teach 21st century skills to our scholars. Virtual Academy families can drive through our bus loop area any time from 10:45 am - 12:45 pm on Wednesday, May 12th. Students will be greeted by the Boosterthon staff to receive their pledge prizes.

*Virtual Academy Registration for 2021-2022: So far we have had 94 students sign up for Virtual Academy for the 2021-2022 school year. If you missed the deadline for registration, just sign up here by Wednesday, May 12th and we will take care of you. We don’t want to force anyone to come into the building when they are not ready. Below is the amount of students in our school that have signed up so far.

Kindergarten = 11 students
1st Grade = 18 students
2nd Grade = 18 students
3rd Grade = 19 students
4th Grade = 13 students
5th Grade = 15 students

Families will receive Virtual Academy confirmation letters for this registration on Wednesday, May 12th. All Virtual Academy families will be placed on Track 4.

*Virtual Academy Drive Thru: Our Community Outreach Committee has planned a Virtual Academy drive through for Wednesday, May 19th from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Virtual Academy families with students in grades 3-5 can drive through the bus loop area and the Virtual Academy families with students in grades K-2 can drive through the front carpool area. Virtual Academy teachers and Instructional Assistants will be there to wave and cheer students on as we finish out our last month of school. This is our way of seeing and thanking all our Virtual Academy students for working so hard to learn at home this year.

*Masks for Outdoors: Masks are no longer required for staff or students outside. Please talk with your children about putting their mask in their pocket, tying it to their wrist, or wearing it under their chin so they do not lose it at recess. Many staff and students may prefer to continue wearing it while playing outside. It is a personal choice while being outside. However, masks are still required inside the school and while riding a WCPSS school bus or district contracted vehicle.

*Cafeteria Seating Changes: Since WCPSS eased some of their restrictions for eating and drinking, we started seating students three feet instead of six feet away from one another while eating in the cafeteria. This practice now permits three classes to eat in the cafeteria at one time. Students still face the same direction and do not talk while their masks are off. Kindergarten and fifth grade classes still sit six feet apart in the cafeteria since there are only two Plan A classes.

*Calendar for 2021-2022: The school board has determined that we will operate as a multi-track year-round school next year. The original track that your family was on, before the pandemic, remains your child’s calendar. Many families applied for a track change and many new families have not received track assignments upon registration this school year. Therefore, we will send our track changes and track confirmations to new families by May 31, 2021. Next year’s calendar can be obtained here.

*EOGs/Testing Survey for Virtual Academy Students: To help facilitate planning for our End of Grade tests, we need to survey all our Virtual Academy families that have students in grades 3-5. Please read the testing letter and fill out the survey here. Our 3rd grade Virtual Academy students are invited to school on June 8th and June 10th to take reading and math EOG tests. Our 4th grade Virtual Academy students are invited to school on June 9th and June 11th to take their EOG tests. Our 5th grade Virtual Academy students are scheduled to test on June 9th, June 11th, and June 15th. 5th grade students have an additional day of testing because they take a science EOG test. All students would be required to wear masks while in the building and would be seated three feet from other students that would be testing.

*Technology Tidbits: Students that will transition to other WCPSS schools or stay at Carpenter, will retain their Chromebooks through track-out. These devices do not need to be checked back in. If families are moving out of WCPSS, then the laptops must be returned to Carpenter. All hotspots will be turned off at 4:00 pm on June 21st, no matter what school your child will be attending next year. All hotspots must be turned into Carpenter Elementary on June 22nd. Students that have registered for Virtual Academy for the 2021-2022 school year, will receive details about obtaining new hotspots later in the year.

*Talent Show/PTA Meeting: Carpenter Elementary has talent! Join us for a PTA Meeting on Tuesday, May 25th at 5:30 pm via Google Meet. Following the PTA meeting there will be a virtual 6:00 pm Talent Show. Stay tuned for details on how to register your child for the Talent Show.

*Asynchronous Days: The last two asynchronous days for the year are Wednesday, May 19th, and Wednesday, May 26th.

As always, please contact us if you have any questions or need support.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Fay Jones
