September 2 Weekly Message
Hello Pleasant Grove Families! This is Principal Batten with information about school events for the week.
No School on Monday, September 2 – Labor Day Holiday
Kindergarten Families Tissues & Tea: Tuesday, September 3, 8:45 – 9:15 AM, Media Center. Meet with the school counselor, Ms. Hines, and connect with other families who are adjusting to having a child starting school.
Parents: If you plan to park and walk your child into school on Tuesday morning, be patient and safe as you look for parking spaces. If you pick your child up in carpool during the afternoon, please remain in the carpool line. If your child will ride the bus, be at your bus stop early and be patient as new students are getting use to riding a bus and routes are being adjusted.
Buses: Thank you for your patience with buses. The number of bus riders will increase this week and that could create delays. Visit https://www.wcpss.net/busrider for information about bus routes and the Here Comes the Bus app. The contact number for WCPSS Bus Transportation is 919-805-3030. Each afternoon we post bus departure times on our school bus twitter @pgesbuses.
Carpool: Carpool enters and exits the school at Pleasant Grove Church Road. Be sure that your child exits and enters your car from the passenger side. Several close calls occurred last week with cars passing as families were unloading on the driver side. Pull all the way down to the furthest point to load/unload. For safety, do not attempt to pass around cars. If you need more time with your child, pull down to an open parking space and then walk your child to the front entrance. You can obtain a carpool tag from the school office. If your family is returning to Pleasant Grove you will use the same carpool number from last year. Pleasant Grove does not have any students who walk to school. All students should use either carpool, bus, daycare van, or Parks & Rec.
Cafeteria: Lunch full price is $2.75 and breakfast full price is $1.25. Families can make electronic payments for meals online at www.mySchoolBucks.com with your child's Student ID number. Families can also apply for meal benefits online at www.myschoolapps.com. After October 7, families who have not reapplied for meal benefits will lose access to their benefits from last year. Flyers “Independence Day”: We want our students to develop independence and confidence that will serve them well in the classroom. We also want our teachers to make the most of their instructional time, including the morning time before school. This preparation time is a very busy time for our teachers. They must monitor students and attend to instructional duties. Although this is a popular time for parents and teachers to interact, we must place the needs of our students and their instruction first.
With this in mind, we are declaring our “Independence Day” for the 2019-2020 school year to be Monday, September 23, 2019. On that date and thereafter, we are requesting that K-5 students walk to class “independently” and that parents schedule meetings with teachers at other times if personal conversations are needed.
To assist with traffic and safety issues, students transported to schools should be dropped off and picked up in the designated areas. We are confident that the next few weeks will provide our students – including our kindergarteners – with sufficient time to adjust to the new school year. We ask for all parents to assist us in making this a positive experience for our students and teachers and in helping us to maximize our instructional time. If your child has specific needs, please contact your child’s teacher.

PTA: Have you joined the PTA? Visit the PTA website to join. Dues are $7. You can also sign up to receive messages directly from the PTA. The PTA sends out its messages separately from the school.
Parent Curriculum Night & PTA Meeting: Thursday, September 19, 6 PM – 7:30 PM. All families are invited to join this special event to kick off the school year! Look for more information coming home with your child in the upcoming days.
PTA Annual Giving Drive: The PTA Giving Drive has started. 100% of what you contribute directly supports programs for students led by the PTA. This includes special performances by artists, events like Field Day, computer programs for students, and assistance for students in need.

- PTA School Book Fair: October 21 – 25
Parks & Recreation Programs: Drop off and pick up for Parks & Recreation occurs at the bus loop. Morning drop off for Parks & Rec begins at 7:00 AM and ends at 8:30 AM. Afternoon pick up for Parks & Rec begins after 4:15 PM and ends at 6:30 PM. Parks & Rec families must yield for school bus transportation.
Volunteers: Don’t forget all volunteers from last year must reactivate their volunteer status by October 31. New parents must be approved by WCPSS prior to volunteering. Use the volunteer registration kiosk in the school Media Center.
