Emotional Safety for Students

  • In the wake of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, it is important that parents and caregivers be aware of circumstances that could challenge the safety and well-being of children.  The following tips are intended to help keep children safe should they be absent from school:

    • If your child is staying home alone, make sure your they have any emergency contact numbers and know how to reach you if needed.
    • Discuss age-appropriate health and safety issues with your child.
    • If your child is staying home alone, make sure they are aware of the boundaries and what they are and are not allowed to do. Be sure to discuss online safety with your child.
    • If your child is staying with relatives or friends during the absence from school, make sure they are in a safe environment with supervision from a known and trusted adult.
    • Be aware of any emotional stressors that may exist for you or your child. This could include the loss of a loved one, recent family changes, or illness in the family.

    Changes in routine can be stressful for children.  With an extended school break comes changes in schedule. 

    Some things to consider: 

    • Maintain as much structure as possible. For younger children, keep mealtimes and bedtimes consistent. 
    • Keep you child connected to their learning as much as possible. Ensure that children are engaging in academically challenging activities and lessons.
    • Maintain open communication with your child. If they feel uncomfortable in new settings during the absence from school, listen to their concerns. 
    • Without consistent homework or school projects to consume their time, children may turn to more screen time. Make sure your child knows how to remain safe online, and limit screen time especially for younger children.
