August Principal Message 2021
Greetings Hornet Families,
I know it has been quite an experience the past year and a half. It is my hope that you are just as excited as I am about returning to school on Monday, August 23, 2021. Our primary goal is to assist your child with a smooth transition back into a nurturing and strong learning environment. The March 13, 2019 school closures affected so many students and families and we are committed to placing an emphasis on their well-being above all else. Developing a strong partnership with you will be incredibly important in this process and we are invested in meeting your child’s personal and academic needs. By working together, we can guarantee that ALL students experience academic success and feel the safety and security necessary for a smooth return. This school year is about re-establishing a sense of normalcy for all students and developing a strong partnership with our school community is extremely important in this process.
The school’s bell schedule will return to normal as in years past which is 8:15am to 3:00pm. Students may enter the building at 7:45am and the instructional day will start at 8:15am. All students are expected to be in class at 8:15am prepared for learning. Please do not drop your child off before 7:45am as your child’s safety is important to us and we will not have supervision for students until 7:45am.
Student schedules will be finalized in PowerSchool by August 17th, 2021. Please view student schedules in PowerSchool before Open House on August 19th, 2021. Schedules will be available for distribution at the Open House on August 19, 2021. If you are unable to attend the open houses or view your schedule in powerschool, please stop by the front office after August 19th, 2021 to obtain a copy.
Students are asked to bring their laptops and chargers to school each day. Students will be able to charge their devices at lunch and during electives. Information will be provided regarding WCPSS student laptop distribution as we begin the school year.
Please bring water bottles to fill throughout the day as students may not drink directly from the fountains.
Each morning beginning at 7:45 am, staff members will be on duty in the carpool area. Please assist us in making sure the carpool line moves smoothly and efficiently by following the traffic patterns and guidance of the staff on duty when entering and leaving campus. Just as last school year, the carpool drop off will be at the back of the building as we continue to plan/prepare for the widening of Holly Springs Road. The current carpool pattern gets all cars off the road and on campus to support that initiative.
Students will unload as directed by the staff and enter the building through the side entrance. Information pertaining to WCPSS transportation policies, procedures, and routes will be found at the WCPSS Transportation Website. To ensure you have school transportation, please request transportation at the following link.
Please visit PowerSchool to view your child’s schedule for the semester. If you do not have a PS login visit the guidance office for information on how to obtain one. Information on how to sign up for the parent portal (PowerSchool) can be found here. Additionally, schedules will be made available at our Open House August 19, 2021 from 5:00-7:00pm. All SchoolMessenger information is generated from what you enter into PS. Only the email addresses and phone numbers you enter will receive school updates.
Holly Ridge Middle School will follow the recommended 3W’s school-wide. Students will be required to social distance, wash their hands frequently and wear face coverings at all times. While we understand there are many opinions about the use of face coverings, it is important to understand that Holly Ridge will enforce this policy to the maximum extent and align with the district expectation at that time.
Parents are asked to limit visits to the school with the exception of dropping off essential items for student academic success. Parents will not enter the building, however, an office staff member will meet you at the door to address your needs.

Medication Drop Off
Beginning Monday August 9, 2021 , parents may email email@example.com to schedule appointments to drop off any medications necessary.
Important Lunch Information
- Free lunch for everyone is extended until June, 2022.
- We still need parents to recertify for lunches even though everyone eats free. Applications are available at the front desk in case parents can't fill them out online.
Virtual Academy/Plan B Switch
As you are already aware, students who are registered in Virtual Academy must remain in VA until the semester ends before a change is considered. Additionally, Plan B students may not register for VA until the spring semester. The District will send a survey to accommodate parent requests for changes to the second semester VA/Plan B designation.
Please review the agenda information for the upcoming Open House. Students registered for Virtual Academy may also pick up materials needed for instruction at this time. If you do not attend the open house, materials will be available under the front carpool awning from August 19-August 25. Materials will have the students name on them. Food trucks on-site from 3pm-7pm for dinner. Prepare for lots of traffic as the elementary school will have their Open House from 2pm-4pm. (Mask expectations will be Wake County Schools guidelines at the time)
New students to Holly Ridge
School tours are being offered on August 3, 2021 and August 5, 2021 by appointment only for newcomers unable to attend the 6th grade Hornet Camp or Open House. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org as space is limited to 10 people per tour.
