Speech Therapist

Exciting news!  We have received word that a contract Speech/Language Therapist will begin with us on April 1st until the end of the year.  The new therapist will acclimate to our school, get to know our students, and create a schedule to begin providing services as outlined in IEPs.  Compensatory services will be offered this summer for service time missed due to the lack of services provided this year.

Congratulations Chess Champions!

Congratulations to our HDES Chess Team!  Our K-1 team earned 3rd place in the 2024 K-12 Chess Championship in Charlotte.  Congratulations to all of our players and especially Mars Zheng, 1st grade in Mrs. Page’s class, and Meera Iyer, 1st grader in Mrs. Weiss’s class.

AM Carpool Safety

Please remember that students should only be dropped off in the morning at the front of the school at one of the colored cones.  Safety patrol and staff will be there to open the door for your child so they can safely exit the vehicle and enter the building.  Students should never be dropped off in the carpool line or from parking spots.  For their safety, we don’t want students navigating through the moving cars.  Parents should practice patience in the carpool line and know that the safety of our students is our number one priority.

Art Club Opportunities

The final "Contest Club" of the year will begin on March 14 and meet on Thursdays in the Art Room 203 from 8:15-9:00 through May 22.  Students will have the opportunity to create works of art for the "Extraordinary Earth Project".  For this club,  students will raise money for environmental causes by making art.  For each piece of art submitted, Sudentsrebuild.org will donate $5 towards environmental causes.  Students are encouraged to bring recycled or natural materials to use in their artmaking.

Needed -  2 Liter Bottles

5th graders will be learning about ecosystems and will create ‘Eco Columns’, which have an aquarium on the bottom and a terrarium on the top.  In order to complete this project, students need an abundance of 2 liter bottles.  If you have any extra (empty), clear, 2 liter bottles, please drop them off at the office until March 15th and we will ensure 5th graders have ample supplies for their great learning experience.

Spring Break

Spring Break is rapidly approaching!  March 25 - 29 there will be no school for staff or students for Spring Break.  Whether you will have a vacation or a staycation, I hope you enjoy this much deserved time off!

Old (but important) News!

Visitors vs. Volunteers

Please remember there is a difference between a visitor and a volunteer.

A visitor is someone who comes into the school building for a presentation, watches a student performance, has lunch with a student, or otherwise is not engaged with students.  Visitors do not need to be registered volunteers.

Volunteers are people who come into the school to work with students, support a learning experience, assist with classroom activities, attend field trips, and will work with students other than their own.  Volunteers must be registered with Wake County Schools.  Any parent or family member who is not a registered volunteer will not be admitted to the school/classroom or attend a field trip.  This is for the safety of all of our students and required by WCPSS.

All parents should complete the volunteer registration process so that they are able to come into school or attend field trips on short notice.  Take a few minutes to complete the registration at the link below.  Volunteer Registration is a two step process so remember to check your email after you complete the first part so that the second portion can be completed.  Also, this process must be completed every year

WCPSS Volunteer Registration

Phones, Smartwatches, etc.

If any K-5 student brings a cellphone, smartwatch, or other technology device to school, they will be expected to keep the device(s) in their backpacks during the school day.  These devices are not needed in the classroom and can cause distractions to students.  If a student needs to contact a parent, they can go to the office to call home.

Parent ID
Please make sure you bring your Photo ID every time you come to come to school.  Our new Visitor Management System requires a photo ID each time you sign in to visit a classroom/lunch and each time you sign in or out your child.

PTA

Please take a few minutes to join the Highcroft PTA.  By joining the PTA you are supporting all of the wonderful things PTA does for our school and for your children.  It’s an easy and inexpensive way to support our school.  You can join electronically at HDES PTA Website

Here Comes the Bus

WCPSS Transportation offers families of students who ride a bus to or from school a service called ‘Here Comes the Bus’.  This allows families to track buses and see how close the buses are to your stop.  HDES no longer utilizes Twitter to announce bus departure times.

You will need the WCPSS school code (67500) and your student’s ID number to create an account.  Use the link below for specific instructions on downloading and utilizing the app.
