Message From Our Principal

Greetings, Highcroft parents and families!  I hope everyone is having a great week and getting ready for the unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day.  There is no school for staff or students on Monday, May 29th in celebration of the Memorial Day Holiday.

We begin EOG testing on Tuesday, May 30th with the reading EOG for all students in grades 3-5.  This is the time of year when we all go on quiet lockdown to support our upper grades as they work hard on the EOGs.  Please support your 3rd - 5th grader by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and give them a pep talk before they come to school on EOG days.

Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.  Have a great rest of your week!

Catherine Shearin, Principal

No Visitors During Lunch Next Week

Lunch, recess, and specials are going to all be on different schedules next week and we will be on ‘silent’ mode until testing is over each day.  Therefore, please do not plan to attend lunch with your children next week (Tues, 5/29 - Fri, 6/2).  Families will be welcomed back for lunch during the last week of school.

Year Books
Yearbooks were sent home with all students last week.  If you wish to keep the book, please send $17 in the envelope provided.  If you do not want to pay for it, please return the book by June 2nd.  All money and/or books are due on Friday, 6/02

EOG Testing
End Of Grade testing for all 3rd - 5th grade students will occur next week. This is an important time of year for students, our school, and our district.  EOG tests are used to measure grade level proficiency and academic growth from year to year.  It is important that all students are present during testing times.

Any 3-5 students who arrive late on EOG Days (see schedule below), will have to wait in the office until testing is completed for the day and then complete the test during the ‘make up’ days. Also, students will not be able to be checked out early on those days until all testing is completed.

Monday - May 29th - Memorial Day Holiday - No School for Students or Staff

Tuesday, May 30th - Reading EOG for grades 3-5

Wednesday, May 31st - Math EOG for grades 3 - 5

Student Chromebooks

Beginning this week, all students in grades 3-5 will keep Chromebooks at school overnight in preparation for the EOGs.  It’s important that every student has a Chromebook that is fully charged and ready for the on-line EOG testing.

5th grade students will turn in their Chromebooks at the end of the school year.  All 5th grade/rising 6th grade students will receive a new Chromebook at the beginning of next year at his/her middle school.  All other students in grades 1-4 will take Chromebooks home for the summer.  It is the student and family’s responsibility to care for the Chromebooks over summer break.

Field Day is Coming!

Field Day is always one of the most exciting activities to celebrate the end of the year!  Mr. Masullo has many great activities planned.   Field Day will be on Tuesday, June 6th (rain date of Wednesday, June 7th).  K-2 will be in the morning, 10:00 - 12:00 and 3-5 will be in the afternoon, 1:00 - 3:00.  Students should come to school that day with sunscreen already applied, water bottles, towels, and a dry change of clothes.  Students can wear swimsuits under their clothing but should still bring a change of clothes.  Water shoes or flip flops must be worn during field day, no bare feet are allowed for safety reasons.

Mr. Masullo is counting on many parent volunteers so please sign up at the link below.

Ice Pops Needed!

Field day is right around the corner, and we would love to reward the students with some well deserved ice pops on a hot day. The goal is to collect around 800 Ice Pops. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

5th Grade Picnic and Graduation

If you are the parent of a 5th grader, mark your calendars now.  The annual 5th grade picnic is scheduled for Thursday, June 8th from 12:00 - 2:30 and the 5th grade Graduation will be Friday, June 9th from 10:00 - 12:00.  Families can bring up to 6 family members for the celebration.  Students may be checked out after the celebration and reception to begin the summer fun and preparation for middle school.

Planning for 2023-24

It’s hard to believe, but we are already beginning our planning for the 2023-24 school year.  With that being said, families are already thinking about teacher placement for students for next year.  I welcome input about your child, his/her learning styles, and teaching styles.  The way your child learns and the type of teaching style that best meets your child’s needs can be sent to me at kshearin@wcpss.net.  We have an amazing staff of teachers in our school and at every grade level.  Therefore, specific teacher requests should not be included in any information you provide as they will not be taken into consideration when placing your child next year.

Not Returning to Wake County Schools next year?

If you do not plan to attend a Wake County School next school year, please let us know for planning purposes as soon as you are able.  Please submit the withdrawal form with the last day of school-June 9th.  5th Grade parents this is especially important if you do not plan to attend Mills Park Middle.  They are a capped school for rising 6th graders.  Once we receive the withdrawal form back, this will open a seat for a student on the waitlist.
