May 12, 2020

Dear Parents,

Hello!  I hope everyone continues to do as well as expected during this time.  Here are several important updates.  There are many important items this week so please read carefully.

1. Grading: The district has provided guidance for grading for 3rd quarter and the end of the year.  While we are still waiting for some small details, here is what I can share with you at this time:

a. Students will receive a numerical grade for 3rd quarter.  The grade will be whatever their 3rd quarter grade was as of March 13th, the last day we were in school.  We recognize this information is updated from what we were originally told regarding the grade of a P or W.

b. There will be no numerical grade or a P or W grade for 4th quarter. Teachers will continue to focus on participation and engagement, providing feedback to students as they have been doing during this time of remote learning.

c. Final grades will be calculated using an average of their first 3 quarterly grades.

d. Report cards will not be sent home at the end of 4th quarter, but students and parents will be able to access this information in Powerschools.

e. Students taking courses for high school credit (Math 1, Math 2, 8th grade Spanish) will be provided an opportunity to decide if they would like to receive a final grade as a numerical average (as described in letter c) or a final grade as a P.  In either case, they will receive the high school credit for that class.

Please note, their final grade does not count toward their high school GPA.  This is the same as in the past.  Taking a high school class in middle school has never counted as part of their GPA so this is the same as pre-COVID-19.

Within the next week, teachers will be reaching out with a form for you to complete to indicate whether a student would like to receive their numerical grade or a P.  I will follow-up further as we get closer to sending out this form.

2. Locker Clean Out / Returning Items: The district will be sending us some additional guidance about this later this week.  As soon as we have that information and finalize our schedule for this, I will communicate it to you.

3. Medication Pick Up: In my next principal message I will be sharing details regarding medication pick-up for the 2019 – 2020 school year, as well as directions for preparing to turn medication in for the 2020 – 2021 school year.  Medication currently at school may remain at school for next year if you choose.  Please note that if you do pick up any medicine (or already have) you will need to complete a new 1702 Form.  You can find that form by clicking here: 1702

4. EOY Celebrations: We recognize that COVID-19 has forced us to think differently about many things, including End-of-Year celebrations.  In 6th and 7th grade teachers are working on celebrating the end of the year in various ways.  While there will be no awards given, they do plan to share a special message and celebrate the many accomplishments of their students and team this year.  We are also discussing ways to allows 6th and 7th grade students to reconnect with this year’s teachers when we return to school and settle in.

Because our 8th graders will be leaving and heading off to high school, we are planning some additional celebration activities.  This will include some specific student recognition, as well as some other memorable activities.  More information to come for our 8th grade students.

5. Food Distribution: As we assess the continual food security and access needs throughout our communities, WCPSS has decided that we will continue to serve meals to our students and families until schools reopen.  As a reminder, we serve meals to any families who would like to take advantage of this resources each day from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.  This takes place curbside in our bus loop.

6. GOOD NEWS:  Our very own Walker Ballard, Band Director, was selected out of ALL of the Student Teacher nominees at Appalachian State as one of seven FINALISTS for Student Teacher of the Year!!! Mr. Ballard finished his student teaching prior to joining us in January.  The final announcement will come this Saturday, but regardless of that; we are so happy to have him at RMS!

7.
