January 3, 2023--Special Message

Good afternoon, this is Steve Mares, Principal of Athens Drive Magnet High School, with a special message for Tuesday, January 3rd. A copy of this message will be posted on our school website (www.wcpss.net/athensdrivehs), emailed to our students, and emailed and texted to our school families.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Because I want to keep you informed, I would like you to be aware of an incident that we are investigating.

We recently discovered a threat to our campus that had been posted on social media. This has been reported to the Raleigh Police Department, and we are working closely with them and the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Security team to investigate.

The written threat, which included a racial slur, had been scribbled on a table on our campus, photographed, and posted on social media.

The investigation is underway, and we do have leads. Once we have identified the offender or offenders, appropriate action will be taken. This could include both school disciplinary and legal actions depending upon whom we find the offender or offenders to be.

We have requested to have extra Raleigh Police and WCPSS Security personnel on campus in the coming days as an extra precautionary measure.

As you know, we take all threats seriously and work closely with law enforcement and the courts.

I appreciate the students and families who came forward sharing information about this threat, and I ask that you talk with your student about the seriousness of making threats of any kind. Equally important, encourage them to report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult at school or to you. Students and parents can also report safety concerns to our anonymous tip line, (919) 856-1911.

Please know that I appreciate your continued support of a safe learning environment for our students, staff, and entire school family.
