CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS WHO EARNED GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL ACCEPTANCES: The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented High School students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two College campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades. The program is only open to rising Seniors from across the State. This year, we have four rising Seniors who have been selected for Governor’s School: Claire Siegal for Instrumental Music, Jane Hill for Instrumental Music, Luc Bonpain for Natural Science, and Erika Chan for Natural Science! I am proud that these students were accepted and will have this outstanding experience this summer! I continue to be excited to share the excellence of our students with our school families!


NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, MARCH 28TH FOR STUDENTS AND UPCOMING CALENDAR REMINDERS: Please remember that the Third Quarter ended today, Friday, March 25th, and the Fourth Quarter begins on Tuesday, March 29th. Monday, March 28th, is a Workday and there is no school for students on Monday, March 28th. Please remember that Third Quarter Report Cards will go home next Friday, April 1st.


OUR SPRING MUSICAL—BEEHIVE, THE 60s MUSICAL—IS BEING PRESENTED NEXT WEEK: Please mark your calendars for our Spring Musical, Beehive, the 60s musical! Beehive celebrates the powerful female voices of the 1960’s with such timeless hits as “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Be My Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” Told from the perspective of several young women who come of age in this enigmatic decade, Beehive takes us from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation. Our award-winning Theatre Department will be presenting this rockin' production to the public on Thursday, March 31st, Friday, April 1st, and Saturday, April 2nd. All shows will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Athens Drive Auditorium. While tickets will be sold at the door, we recommend students and families purchasing their tickets in advance. SENIOR BREAKFAST IS THURSDAY, MARCH 31ST: Our Senior Breakfast is almost here! On Thursday, March 31st, from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., we will celebrate with the Class of 2022 in Jaguar Stadium as these Seniors begin their FINAL QUARTER of their High School experience! Seniors will report to First Period as usual, and then we will call them to the Stadium. Students will enjoy this event and returning to class towards the end of Second Period. We will have a tremendous assortment of breakfast items (such as Bojangles and Chick-fil-A), music, fun, important information, and prizes (we have 3 Smart TVs as grand prizes!), all thanks to our wonderful Senior Parents who have worked tirelessly to make this event happen! CAP, GOWN, AND SENIOR GRADUATION PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION NEXT WEEK: Immediately following our Senior Breakfast, as our Seniors head back to class, they will be able to pick-up their Graduation Cap and Gown (and any other Graduation products they ordered) from Jostens. Jostens will be set up outside of Jaguar Stadium and I am excited for our Seniors to receive their Caps and Gowns! Seniors need to be sure to have all balances paid in full to Jostens to pick-up their Caps and Gowns. In addition, we have purchased Yard Signs announcing our Athens Drive Graduates that we will be giving to each Senior! I am proud of the work they have completed to earn their Diploma, and I am excited to provide a Yard Sign once again to each Graduate!


GRADUATION FEE PAYMENT REMINDER: Seniors need to remember that they must pay our Graduation Fee of $60.00 online (on our school website, under Parents and Online Payments) or in-person in the Main Office before they can participate in the remaining Senior Events (e.g., Prom, Senior Picnic, or receive their Graduation Tickets). SENIOR NAMES BEING CALLED AT GRADUATION: In order to help ensure the correct pronunciation of our Seniors names at Graduation, we are asking every Senior to complete this Google Form. Thank you for your help in getting this information so that Mr. Katz can prepare for the reading of names at Graduation!


CINDERELLA PROJECT ON APRIL 1ST: For all our families of students who are interested in attending Prom on Saturday, May 14th, the Athens Drive Student Government is sponsoring the Cinderella Project during the school day. We will have a large selection of gently used Prom gowns, suit coats, shoes, and accessories that we will set up in the Library on Friday, April 1st. Students will have the opportunity to stop by the Library during ALL Lunch Periods to try on gowns and suit coats, and they can then "reserve" the items for pick-up after school. We will also have time after school for students who wish to stop and shop for items. I am proud and excited that our Student Government is once again hosting this event to support our students!


CINDERELLA PROJECT DONATIONS: If you have any gently used gowns, suit coats, pants, ties, shoes, and accessories that you are willing to donate to our efforts, we will welcome that! Students and/or school families can drop off donations in the Main Office or Library. FINAL SAT PREP COURSE FOR THE YEAR BEGINS IN APRIL: Juniors and their families, our final SAT Prep Course of the school year is enrolling right now to prep for the final SAT of the school year (given in June). Our SAT Prep Class begins on April 19th to prepare students for the June 4th SAT Test administration. The class meets on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. for six weeks. Space is limited, and to sign up please contact Mr. Remaley (


PTSA MEETING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 29TH WILL BE IN-PERSON IN THE LIBRARY: Please know that our next PTSA Meeting will be an in-person meeting held this coming Tuesday, March 29th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Athens Drive Library. WINTER GUARD AND WINTER PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES: Our Winter Guard and Winter Percussion Ensembles will be performing in the Atlantic Indoor Association Championships at Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville this weekend. Our Winter Guard will perform on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. and our Winter Percussion ensemble will perform on Sunday at 3:44 p.m. I wish them well and appreciate the outstanding way that they have represented The Drive throughout their competitions this season!


WINTER PERCUSSION AND WINTER GUARD EXHIBITION PERFORMANCE: If you haven’t had a chance to see our Winter Percussion or Winter Guard perform this season, you will have a chance to see them next week! We are hosting a Winter Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard Ensemble Exhibition Performance on Wednesday, March 30th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. Please come out and enjoy the talents of our students!


CHILDREN’S COLORING BOOK DRIVE: The Athens Drive Magnet High School Red Cross Club is hosting a Children’s Coloring Book Drive for impoverished children in our local community. Anyone can donate new or unused coloring books into any of the Red Cross coloring book donation boxes around the school through Thursday, March 31st. Students can get 1 volunteer service hour for every 2 quality coloring books donated. FOOD PANTRY IS OPEN AND AVAILABLE TO OUR SCHOOL FAMILIES: Please remember that our Food Pantry is available as a resource to all Athens Drive families. If you have questions, or need any assistance, please contact Ms. Burnette ( in Student Services.


ARMED SERVICE VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY EXAM (ASVAB):  Please know that Wednesday, April 6th, beginning at 7:30 a.m. in Room 2410, we will be administering the ASVAB Test. The ASVAB Test helps students learn more about their abilities and what careers match up with those abilities and interests. Students can get additional information and sign-up for the ASVAB Test administration by visiting Ms. Carlton (, our Career Development Coordinator, in the back of the Library during the school day or during the student’s Lunch Period. PTSA GROUNDS AND GARDEN SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY AT ATHENS DRIVE: Please mark your calendars for the PTSA Grounds and Garden Spring Clean-Up Day by joining in our campus clean-up efforts on Saturday, April 9th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. This event will be held rain or shine! Please know that students can earn service hours for their participation in this event. Volunteers need to bring their own water bottles and work/gardening gloves if they have them. In addition, we need work tools including shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, pitch forks, loppers, and garden clippers of various sizes. Please know that donations of annuals or native North Carolina plants are also welcomed. Thank you for your support in helping us beautify our campus!


COURSE REGISTRATION FOR THE 2022 – 2023 SCHOOL YEAR: Please know that each student has an individual appointment scheduled with their Counselor to complete the 20222 – 2023 Course Registration process. Appointment information is posted on the wall outside Student Services, on the wall in the 2400 Hallway, and all teachers have the information. We are now holding our Rising 10th Grade student appointments. Students can go ahead and start pre-planning their course registration using the materials found on the Student Services Course Registration website.


ATHENS DRIVE PTSA SCHOLARSHIPS: Our PTSA provides three Scholarships valued at $500.00 each to our Seniors. The application period is now open and will remain open until Friday, April 22nd. Any Senior interested in applying for this Scholarship must be a PTSA member to qualify. Please visit our Athens Drive PTSA website for full qualifications and information.


CLOSING MESSAGE AND TAKE CARE: It is hard to believe that we have finished Three Quarters of the year! I appreciate all the work our students, staff, and school families have put in to make this school year as “normal” as possible! I am excited about a strong finish to our school year, the many Senior events we will be having, and culminating in our Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, June 11th at 12:00 p.m.! CURRICULUM NIGHT AND FRESHMEN OPEN HOUSE INFORMATION: For those families that were not able to attend or those that would like to go back and review the information presented related to the 2022 – 2023 school year, please review our Registration Information document which contains many links to important curriculum information. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL IF YOU ARE SICK OR SYMPTOMATIC! I would continue to ask that we please work together to keep all our students, staff, and visitors safe and work to stop the spread of COVID-19 at The Drive. To support this effort, students who are experiencing any of these Department of Health and Human Services-identified COVID-19 symptoms should NOT come to school: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle of body aches, headache, new loss of taste and smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and/or diarrhea.


UTILIZING POWERSCHOOL TO TRACK YOUR STUDENT’S PROGRESS: Please know that PowerSchool is available for parents in addition to your student(s). This is one of the best ways to keep track of your student’s progress. PowerSchool contains up-to-date grades (including missing assignments). Please know that your parent account will update at the same time grades are entered by teachers. PowerSchool can be used to receive notifications about when your student is tardy or absent from a class. It is highly recommended that all parents use this tool. STUDENTS SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK THEIR WCPSS EMAIL ACCOUNT: Please remember that students need to be checking their WCPSS email account, as that is where important information is communicated to students! I just wanted to remind our students to make this a habit.


FREE TUITION AND FEES FOR IN-STATE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES TO WAKE TECH: Students who graduate from a North Carolina High School this year can attend Wake Tech this Fall at little to no cost. Wake Tech is offering free tuition and fees for 2022 High School Graduates who are classified as a North Carolina resident by the Residency Determination Service (RDS) and enroll for the fall 2022 semester. Additional information regarding this recent news can be found on the Wake Tech website.


PARKING ON CAMPUS: Thank you for your support of our efforts to ensure our students do the right thing and not park on campus unless they have a valid Parking Pass. I would continue to ask all students who want to drive and park on campus to be sure that they have a valid Athens Drive Parking Pass. Please know that the cost of a Parking Pass is prorated, so to park on campus from now until the end of the school is $100.00. Students who park illegally on campus cause us problems as they are taking a space from a staff member or student who has paid for a spot. Please know it is important for us to know who is parking in each space and have parent permission for students to drive and park on campus. Students interested in securing a Parking Pass for the remainder of the 2021 – 2022 school year should carefully read and follow the guidelines on the application. BEING RESPECTFUL WHEN DRIVING TO AND FROM CAMPUS: Now that Athens Drive has been closed due to the bridge replacement project, I would ask for your help as you are driving to and from campus. As our students and school families find alternative routes to school, our neighbors are experiencing an increase in traffic through neighborhoods that haven’t normally experienced that kind of volume. I would ask that we please be mindful of our speed by obeying speed limits, coming to complete stops at stop signs, looking out for little children and families, and driving responsibly as we make our way to and from school in the mornings and afternoons. I want us to always be safe and represent The Drive in only the highest manner. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND FAFSA: Scholarships are one of your family’s most powerful tools in the journey to cover College/University costs without loans because they are funds students earn and never have to pay back! Please visit the Athens Drive Magnet High School Scholarship Page for Scholarships available to students. In addition, to qualify for Financial Aid, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FUTURE TEACHER PROGRAM APPLICATION NOW OPEN: Another “scholarship” opportunity for students is the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Future Teacher Program. Graduating Seniors who are going to college with the intention of pursuing a Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade teaching career in one of ten identified areas are encouraged to apply for the Future Teacher Program. The application deadline is April 15th. This program offers students an annual summer professional development stipend, and more importantly, a WCPSS teaching position upon Graduation! Students and families can register for an Online Information Session that will be held on February 24th. My daughter was accepted in this Program and is Graduating in May from N.C. State University and knows she has a guaranteed teaching position in WCPSS upon Graduation. As a dad, it is nice to know she is already guaranteed employment to follow her passion!


COVID-19 TESTING AT ATHENS DRIVE MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL: We held our first COVID-19 Testing day at The Drive this morning. For students and staff who enrolled in our free, StrongSchoolsNC COVID-19 Testing, they were tested between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. this morning. We will be testing those staff and students who have enrolled in our program every Friday morning from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Please know that students can still enroll in this program by registering at this link: Athens Drive High COVID-19 Testing Registration.

SPRING SPORTS HAVE STARTED! Spring Sports are underway!  In the Spring Season we offer Baseball, Softball, Women's Soccer, Women's Lacrosse, Men's Lacrosse, Men's Tennis, Men's Golf, Track and Field, and Stunt. With that many sports happening, there is something happening at The Drive almost every night of the week. If you would like to come out and watch a game you can purchase tickets via GoFAN or purchase a Sports Pass that is good for admission to all home events. Even if you aren't able to make it to a game, we encourage you to follow the accomplishments of our teams via Instagram and Twitter (both @athensjags), our Facebook Page, or watch our games on the NFHS Network. FOOD PANTRY IS OPEN! In case you were not aware, at Athens Drive we also have a Food Pantry supported by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The Food Pantry is stocked with non-perishable food items, toiletries, and fresh produce and frozen meats, when possible. FAN CODE OF CONDUCT: As you attend various athletic events, you will also see our Fan Code of Conduct. We ask all spectators to adhere to this Code of Conduct:


  • The Athens Drive Athletic Department is committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all student athletes and fans while visiting our campus.
  • School staff will proactively intervene to support an environment where our student athletes and fans can enjoy an event experience free from the following:
    • Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature
    • Abusive, foul, or disruptive language and obscene gestures
    • Fighting, taunting, or threatening remarks or gestures
    • Throwing objects of any kind
    • Any disruption to the progress of the event caused by a fan’s actions
    • Intoxication or other signs of impairment related to alcohol consumption or other substance abuse
    • Failing to follow instructions from school staff
    • Verbal or physical harassment of opposing team’s student athletes or fans
    • Any behavior that otherwise interferes with the progress of the contest

ATHENS ORACLE: I'm excited to let you know that the Athens Oracle Staff is now publishing daily on our website, Twitter, and Instagram. We moved away from print publication last year and found that the students really liked publishing more online. They can get stories out faster and can use multiple types of media to tell their stories. ATHENS DRIVE TUTORING CLUB: Please remember that our Athens Drive Tutoring Club is up and running, again, for this year. Attached is the information brochure. This is for students that would like to request a Peer Tutor AND for those students who would like to be a Peer Tutor. Information can be found on the Athens Drive Tutoring Club website.


CARPOOL SAFETY: There has been an increase in the number of cars that are just pulling over on Athens Drive to stop and either drop-off students in the morning or pick-up students in the afternoon. This is a very dangerous practice, and I would ask all our parents to please STOP doing this and follow our carpool process and procedures. I know that we all have our students’ safety and well-being as our top priority, and continuing this practice just isn’t worth the extra few minutes you may save in circumventing our on-campus carpool process. Thank you for providing not only a positive role model for our students by doing the right thing, but thank you for caring about the safety of all students by stopping this practice immediately. I do appreciate it.

ACCESSING TEACHER/COURSE INFORMATION: To best support the academic success of our students, every teacher has created a Learning Management System in either Canvas or Google Classroom. Students and families can access these resources by finding their Teacher on our Faculty Directory on the Athens Drive Magnet High School website. Students who are out of school due to absences or quarantine must utilize this resource to stay up-to-date with class assignments and resources.


GRADUATION DATE FINALIZED FOR THE CLASS OF 2022!! I am happy to announce that our Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2022 will be held on Saturday, June 11th, 2022, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Raleigh Convention Center! I look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of this incredible Class at our Commencement Exercises!


STUDENTS MUST HAVE A VALID PARKING PASS TO PARK ON CAMPUS: On Monday, September 13th, we will begin to ticket any cars who are parking on campus who do not have a valid Parking Pass to park on campus. We will also be ticketing students who park in a different Parking Space than the one they are assigned. I would like to ask all students and parents to help us ensure that only those students who have a valid Parking Pass park on campus. Please understand that any student who parks on campus must have a Parking Pass and park only in their assigned space. It is important for us to know who is parking in each space and have parent permission for students to drive and park on campus. Students interested in securing a Parking pass for the 2021 – 2022 school year should carefully read and follow the guidelines on the application. To complete the Parking Pass Application process, please complete the On-Line Parking Registration.


DRESS CODE: I would like to again enlist your support in helping us maintain appropriate dress at school. WCPSS has a Dress Code Policy, and I would ask that all students adhere to this Dress Code. Please be sure that students do not wear clothing that violates the Dress Code. In addition, hats, hoods that are pulled over the head, do-rags, and bandanas are also not allowed to be worn on school grounds. I would ask that we work together to be sure our students dress appropriately and focus on learning. I thank you for your support!


ATTENDANCE INFORMATION: We are implementing new procedures for Student Check-In and Check-Out and are working to go as paperless as possible with regards to our Attendance procedures. I would ask that school families please use our Attendance-Specific email address ( to send any communication regarding Attendance. Any emails from parents/guardians, doctor’s offices, etc. need to be sent to that email address. In addition, when a parent/guardian comes to school to check-out or check-in a student, the parent/guardian will be using a QR Code that we have posted on the Front Door of the school to complete our process. As soon as the parent/guardian is done entering the information in the Google Doc, we will contact the student’s teacher and the student will come to the Front Doors of the school for Check-Out. Please remember that for safety reasons, there are no student Check-Outs allowed after 1:45 p.m. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we implement these new procedures.


VIRTUAL ACADEMY WEBSITE: We have created a Virtual Academy website that is open as a resource for our Virtual Academy students. We hope this information supports our Virtual Academy students and families as they embark on virtual teaching and learning this year.


FREE SCHOOL MEALS FOR THE ENTIRE 2021 – 2022 SCHOOL YEAR: Please remember that Breakfast, and Lunch, will be available at no cost to all students for the 2021 – 2022 school year. While WCPSS may be able to offer free meals to all students, it is very important for eligible parents to complete a meal benefits application because this data enables schools to obtain funding to provide other important educational resources to benefit our students. Other benefits that are issued directly to families that have applied and are eligible for meal benefits may also be available (such as the P-EBT cash benefit). Parents can complete a meal benefits application online at Paper applications also are available at all schools. FAMILY PARTNERS—OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE: I am looking to start a new program to better facilitate communication and to address the specific needs of each Grade Level. Our Family Partners program will be an opportunity for our school families to meet throughout the year to receive specific information related to the Grade Level of their student. I am hoping this will build positive relationships and increase timely, specific information to our school families. To make this partnership work, I am asking that we have approximately five parents/guardians from each to serve as a Lead Family Partner for each Grade. These Lead Family Partners will serve as facilitators for each group along with one Administrator and one Counselor. Together, these individuals will lead meetings (my thinking is maybe three/four meetings a year), be a resource for Grade Level school families, support Grade Level families through communication, and be Grade Level representatives at a few of our school-wide events (e.g., Magnet Open House, Curriculum Night, etc.). The time commitment will not be overwhelming, I promise, and it will give these individuals a chance to gain insights and information to support their own students and all students in that Grade Level. Lead Family Partners will move each year forward with their Grade Level (e.g., the same Lead Family Partners for the Freshmen Class this year will be the same Lead Family Partners for the Sophomore Class next year, etc.). If you would be interested in serving in this capacity, I would ask you to please complete this Family Partner Information Form letting me know your interest in serving in this capacity. Thank you for considering this new service opportunity to make a positive difference for our students and school!


PARKING PASS: Parking passes for Juniors and Seniors in good standing for the 2021 – 2022 school year are now available. Students interested in securing a Parking pass for the 2021 – 2022 school year should carefully read and follow the guidelines on the application. To complete the Parking Pass Application process, please be sure to do the following:

  • Print and complete the One-Page Paper Application (which includes a signed copy of the Athens Drive Magnet High School and Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Rules and Regulations). Please note the dates for accepting applications.
  • Make a clear copy of your valid North Carolina Driver’s License (permanent license, not a permit) and Vehicle Registration(s).
  • Students must not have any outstanding fees and fines (our Main Office Staff will verify this). A Parking Tag will not be issued if a student has any outstanding fees or fines.


The cost of a Parking Pass is $200.00 for the year. Parking tags may be picked up beginning on Monday, August 2nd, Monday through Friday, through Friday, August 20th, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Please know that Parking Passes and Off-Campus Lunch Passes are two separate applications.


OFF-CAMPUS LUNCH PASS: Off-Campus Lunch passes for Juniors and Seniors in good standing for the 2021 – 2022 school year are also now available. A Junior or Senior student cannot leave campus during Lunch without having an authorized Off-Campus Lunch pass. Freshmen and Sophomores are NEVER allowed to leave campus during the school day, unless on an approved school trip. To complete this process, please visit the Off-Campus Lunch Pass information page on our Athens Drive Magnet High School website and please note the following:


  • The student must be a Junior or Senior.
  • The student must not have any outstanding fees and fines due to Athens Drive Magnet High School.
  • The student must have the parent/guardian sign the Off-Campus Lunch Pass application.


Please know the 2021 – 2022 Off-Campus Lunch Pass Application Form can be found on our website. The cost for a 2021 – 2022 Off-Campus Lunch Pass is $5.00. The completed form needs to be emailed to our School Receptionist, Ms. Gattens ( or physically brought to the school to the Main Office to turn it in. Please know that since we did not take student photographs last year due to COVID-19, we will need to make every Off-Campus Lunch Pass in the Main Office. Students will need to come to school beginning Monday, August 2nd, between the hours or 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. every day, Monday through Friday, until Friday, August 20th. A completed application and $5.00 fee must be provided before we can create an Off-Campus Lunch Pass for a student. Please know that Parking passes and Off Campus Lunch passes are two separate applications.

JAGUAR PAW PRINTS: Jaguar Paw Prints are on sale again this year for the athlete recognition paws that lead up to Jaguar Stadium. If you purchase a Go Jags Family Pass, it is included with your Pass membership fee. However, if you would like to order a Paw Print separately, please fill out this Paw Print form and we will send more information to you on how to purchase the Paw Print for the 2021 – 2022 school year.   


LIVE STREAMING OF EVENTS IN OUR GYMNASIUM AND JAGUAR STADIUM: We will be offering Live Streaming again this school year through the NFHS Network. You can purchase the Live Streaming package by visiting the WCPSS Live Streaming Website and clicking on Athens Drive.
