April 4, 2021 Principal Message
Hello Patriot Families!
I hope you are enjoying Track Out with your family. Many decisions are being made while students are away to plan for Quarter 4 and for next year. Here are this week’s updates:
Attendance Letters: Due to issues surrounding gathering of attendance in the remote setting, we were originally told not to send attendance letters this year. We have now been advised to do so. Although we’ve been communicating with some families about attendance, we will now be sending official letters. The first one is scheduled to go out next week to all students who have missed three days this year. Please note that we do not consider three absences to be excessive but must send this letter prior to other notifications. I hope that clears up any confusion as to why you may receive a letter at this time.
Drive By Pick up for Virtual Academy: The next Drive By Pick Up will be Monday, April 12, noon-6 pm or Tuesday, April 13, 7:30 am-1:30 pm. Virtual Academy Families should plan to return the current novel their child is reading and plan to pick up a new novel and/or new workbooks. Students planning to return to in-person instruction on April 14th DO NOT need to attend the Drive By Pick up. Your child's current novel will be collected by April 14th in class and new materials will be distributed in class.
EOG Testing: Plans are being adjusted for testing based on the number of students in Plan A and number in Virtual Academy. You can expect additional details in the next Weekly Update. Here’s what we know currently: End-of-Year Testing Updates
Survey for Plan A or Virtual Academy Results: Thank you for providing input on your child’s learning platform for Quarter 4. The survey closed April 1. Based on your feedback, we will now begin changing about 100 schedules. Due to the influx of students into Plan A, some classes that were formerly V.A. will now have to be changed to Plan A. This is the only way we can accommodate additional students in the building since most classes were already full. As a result, your child may have a schedule change whether you elected to change learning platforms or not. Additionally, we may also have to move some students out of assigned core classes in order to better meet social distancing guidelines. We will limit these changes as much as possible.
I know for those who did not change learning platforms this is unpopular news. There is simply no other way to accommodate students in the building and meet social distancing guidelines. If your child’s schedule changes, please work with him/her to discuss resilience. We will be echoing this message at school. All of our core teachers work together to provide the same curriculum and pacing, so I am confident that students will be able to pick up the curriculum where they left off.
Track Out: All students began Track Out on April 1. We welcome everyone back on April 14.
Reminders from Previous Weekly Messages:
Athletics Conditioning Workouts: Refer to the athletics website regarding sports updates. Spring Sports Conditioning Workouts continue through April 30.
Library/Media Center Access: Media Center Reservation
Planning for 2021-2022: We continue to await decisions regarding how Virtual Academy will be implemented and do not anticipate receiving this information until late April or May. These decisions directly impact our track assignments and staffing. I know that many of you are trying to make vacation plans, and my best advice is to go ahead and make them. We will work with you and your student(s) if needed to make up work in 2021-2022. Thank you for your patience as we continue to wait for these decisions.
PTA Help Wanted: We need parents to serve in leadership roles in the PTA for 2021-2022. The following roles are available:
Box Tops for Education Equity Spring Celebration
Hospitality Firecracker Awards Beautification Sponsorships Advocacy Rep
Please contact the current PTA board at HMSPTAWF@gmail.com with any questions.
Technology in Plan A: Students will be required to bring WCPSS issued devices to school and encouraged to bring personal devices. Although many activities will not require their use, devices will remain the primary tool for disseminating online materials and for work submission in order to reduce the possibility of Covid spread. There will be some devices available if a student is unable to bring his/her device.
