March 14, 2021 Principal Message

Hello Patriot Families!

Get ready to Spring Forward tonight!  Please remember to set your clocks forward one hour.   For Plan B families, this week we welcome Cohort 3.  There is an Asynchronous Learning Day on Wednesday (St. Patrick’s Day) for all students this week.  Here are this week’s updates:

8th Grade Families:  High School registration is open!  Your student has been given time in a social studies class period last week to watch the "How To" videos and view all the documents posted on Mrs. McCorquodale's website.  Please refer to her website HERE - then go to the section for your student's specific high school. There you will find "How To" videos and other important information.  All students MUST register NO LATER than March 26th.  However, please help your child with registering as soon as possible.  This will ensure all our HMS 8th graders are registered in a timely manner!

  • Cohort 2 students completed registration this week with Mrs. McCorquodale
  • Cohort 3 students will receive registration support if needed the week of the 15th with Mrs. McCorquodale
  • Cohort 1 students will receive registration support if needed the week of the 22nd with Mrs. McCorquodale
  • VA students/Plan B students who do not come into the building: Pick a time slot HERE (PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL EMAIL ADDRESS) and Mrs. McCorquodale will send you a google meet link to assist with registration.

7th Grade Parents:  Rising 8th grade elective registration is upon us. Starting Monday, March 15, 7th grade students will be able to register for next year's electives. Teachers will post a google form and screencastify of Ms. McCulley providing instructions on how to complete the form in their Homeroom/Encore google classroom. This information is also posted on the Student Services website. The deadline for completing this form is Monday, March 22.

Board Meeting March 16:  Principals were told that the School Board will be discussing feedback that was gathered from secondary principals about potential changes in the frequency of cohorts attending in person instruction as well as the ability to utilize Plan A at the March 16 meeting.  Any changes would not apply to Virtual Academy students.

Cohort Rotation for Plan B:   Next 3 weeks' schedule.   We welcome COHORT 3 this week.

Dress Code:  As the temperatures are getting warmer, we’ve noticed some students selecting clothing more appropriate to the beach than to school.  This is just a reminder for students to adhere to the WCPSS Dress Code Policy.

Eating and Drinking Guidelines:  Principals were told this week that these guidelines are currently being reviewed using state guidance, health data, and district indicators.  We are hopeful that these guidelines will be relaxed as soon as possible but recognize the importance of cafeteria safety.  Although lunch is predominantly silent, we utilize the “Core Plus” period frequently for Social/Emotional Learning, getting outside, and socializing.  This is a half hour period that does not exist in a “normal” school year.

Spring Sports Conditioning:  Please refer to the athletics website regarding upcoming spring sports expectations. This is the last week for fall sports conditioning.   Spring Sports begin March 22.  Here is the signup link if your 7th or 8th grader is planning to attend.

Reminders from Previous Weekly Messages

7th/8th Grade Families: Starting the week of March 8 - March 23, the Student Services team will be presenting a lesson on coping skills called "Keeping Yourself Emotionally & Physically Safe." This lesson will be presented to all of our 7th and 8th graders through their Health/PE classes. More information on this as well as links to the student presentation and a parent presentation is located in the "Reminders" gray section of our main webpage. Please reach out to our counselors if you have any further questions.

Carpool Reminders:  Just a few things to remember when you go through carpool.  Most families do an outstanding job and we appreciate it!

  1. Students should have on their masks prior to rolling down the window for health screening questions.
  2. Students should wait in their vehicles until staff indicate that they can exit their cars each morning.
  3. Parents should wait until their child passes temperature checks before leaving.
  4. Parents should turn off the heat in the car upon entry into the parking lot to help with temperature checks in the morning.   Fortunately, it’s getting warmer outside!
