August 13, 2020 Principal Message
This message comes in lieu of the usual Sunday update. I wanted to make you aware that our resources for Virtual Learning and the Virtual Academy have been updated on our website. I believe you will find a plethora of information for you and your student(s). Here are a few reminders for this coming week:
1st Day: The first day of class for ALL students is Monday, August 17. All students will begin in the virtual setting. Teachers are in the process of sending Google Classroom invitations for all of their classes. Please ask your child to check his/her WCPSS email account for this information. Students will report at 8:10 to their Encore/Homeroom class. Please remind students to mute their microphones as they enter.
Class Assignments: Your child’s schedule should now be available via PowerSchool. All students have a PowerSchool Account in order to access this information. Students use their ID number to access PowerSchool through Homebase. Directions for use: https://ps.wcpss.net/downloads/ncedcloud-wakeid.pdf
Daily Schedule: While working virtually, all HMS students will adhere to the following schedule: https://bit.ly/2Xifp3o . Teachers will provide students information and links to attend classes through Google Classroom.
Drive By Pick Up: The Drive By Pick Up dates for ALL students’ academic materials, such as language arts and math workbooks, are Tuesday, August 18: 8-12 (alpha A-G), 12- 4 (H-M) and Thursday, August 20: 10-2 (N-S), 2-6 (T-Z). If you have flexibility, please abide by the indicated alpha assignments to help us spread out arrivals. However, if you need to attend during a specific window not assigned, we will be there to help you. Please wear a mask. No virtual classes will be held August 18 or 20 so that everyone can attend.
Electives: Due to having to divide our staff into Virtual Academy and Plan B, electives are extremely limited. The elective your child was hoping to take may not be available first semester. We regret that this is the case. Please encourage your child to see the opportunity to learn something new in the elective he/she is assigned. We really appreciate your support on this issue.
Free/Reduced Lunch Information: Food distribution sites for families remain open. Meals are provided free of charge until the end of August. PowerSchool Access for Parents: PowerSchool (Homebase) is the program we use to provide real-time information regarding student updates such as attendance and grades. All students have a PowerSchool account. If you already have a parent PowerSchool account for your child, you do not have to reapply. If you do not have a parent PowerSchool account and would like one (or need to create one for another student), follow these directions: https://www.wcpss.net/student-information . We will collect COMPLETED forms at the scheduled Drive By Pick Up, August 18 and 20. We can also provide you a form, but you won’t be able to sit in the Drive By to complete it; you can drop a completed form by the office during regular hours. We appreciate you being prepared with either a completed notarized form or a completed form with your ID available at the Drive By Pick Up. Please wear a mask.

PTA Information: The HMS School Supply Drive will be moved to the new Pick Up dates and times. Donations can also be made on the PTA website. The PTA has gone Digital! REMINDERS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKLY MESSAGES:
- 7th Grade Students: ALL 7th grade students (whether in Virtual Academy or Plan B) need to provide proof of the Dtap and Meningococcal Immunizations by September 30. Additional information is available on our website.
- Lockers and Uniforms: Students do not need to purchase PE uniforms or locks at this time. If you already purchased a PE uniform, we can provide it at the Drive By Pick Up.
- Supply List: Grade level supply lists are on our website under the Parents section.
We look forward to seeing everyone virtually for the first day of class August 17. IT’s going to be a very different year, but we’re planning for a great one!
