October 11, 2019 Principal's Message
Social Emotional Learning
As a staff, we firmly believe that building strong, positive and healthy relationships with our students, and teaching and modeling for them to do the same with their peers, is an essential part of the teaching and learning process. In fact, it is the foundation that provides access to the core curriculum. Research identifies 5 specific competencies of Social, Emotional Learning (SEL): Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. This year we have committed to teaching these specific competencies to all students through monthly lessons during Encore. I encourage you to visit the SEL resource page on our website for more information on the lessons. Our hope is that all students feel respected, heard, safe and better equipped across all content areas as a result.

Attention 8th graders: High School Options
This message is for our 8th grade parents: Wake County offers a variety of high school options if you are interested in your child attending a high school other than your Base High School. Several of these schools will also be presenting to our 8th graders in Quarter 2 during the regular school day in order to promote the specific programs offered at their schools. The Early College High School Fair is Saturday, Oct 12th from 9-11 AM at Vernon Malone College & Career Academy. The Magnet Fair is Saturday, October 26th from 9AM -12PM at Panther Creek High School. The application period for Early College High Schools opens on October 12th and closes December 16th. The application period for Magnet/Year-Round Schools opens October 26th and closes January 30th. Patriot Fall Athletics are in full swing. Our ladies soccer team won and is now 4-0, our football team is currently 2-2, and our ladies volleyball team is now 2-2. All Patriot athletes represented their school community with pride and outstanding character! Please visit the HMS Athletics website for a full calendar of events and plan to come out to support Patriot Athletics! I would also encourage you to consider following HMS Athletics on Twitter @HMSAthletics1.
Please be aware that we have many students walking to school in the mornings and home from school in the afternoons. Many cross Rogers Road. I ask each of you to drive slowly and be highly alert for students and help us ensure the safety of all our students! Thanks so much.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!
