Salem Middle School students participated in the American Math Competition Level 8 (AMC8) in November. The AMC 8 is a well-known mathematics contest for middle school students, including topics such as probability, estimation, percentages, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs. First, second and third place winners are recognized in a school wide competition and on each grade level.
2018 AMC 8 Math Competition School Winners:
1st Place: Kaya Li (7-4) and Kevin Wang (7-1) - both also top 1% nationally
2nd Place: Dana Jeong (6-1) - top 5% nationally
3rd Place: Vladimir Pustynskiy (8-1) - top 5% nationally
8th Grade Level winners include*:

3rd place*: Sergio Zepeda (8-2)
7th Grade Level winners include*:
1st Place: Kaya Li (7-4) and Kevin Wang (7-1)
2nd Place: Maxwell Shell (7-1)
3rd Place*: Meredith Kirby (7-4), Jonah Nunally (7-3), Jayce Peters (7-1), Ethan Stein (7-3), and Billy Wang (7-3)
6th Grade Level Winners include*:
1st Place: Dana Jeong (6-1)
3rd Place: June Brewer (6-1)
Dana Jeong is among 6th graders who will receive a national achievement award for scoring above 15 correct as a 6th grader*.
