21-22 Family Marathon

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

Please join us this year for a modified version of what has come to be a beloved tradition at
Olive Chapel Elementary School, the Family Marathon! The Family Marathon is an annual event
that encourages children to run/walk the distance of a full marathon, 26.2 miles, at a pace that is
both fun and safe for their growing bodies.

🥇SIGN UP HERE!

Families of K-2 graders will run/walk a total of 26 miles at home together, tracking progress on
the provided training log, and will also be asked to help their runners fill out the provided
reflection sheet so their runners can see that even on days when it seemed hard or they didn’t
feel like moving, that they could do it. These younger runners will then complete the last .2 of
the marathon during their PE class at the end of October, into November. You may begin
tracking your miles as soon as you register!

K-2 Family Marathon Log

Families of 3-5 graders will run/walk a total of 25.2 miles at home together, tracking progress
on the provided training log, and will also be asked to ensure their runners fill out the provided
reflection sheet so they can see that even on days when it seemed hard or they didn’t feel like
moving, that they could do it. These older runners will then complete the last 1 mile of the
marathon during their PE class at the end of October, into November. You may begin tracking
your miles as soon as you register!

3-5 Family Marathon Log

All students who successfully complete the entire distance will receive a medal during PE only if
they submit their signed training log and reflection sheet. Please plan to have your runner
submit BOTH of these provided documents to their teachers on Wednesday, October, 20 for
tracks 1-3 and Wednesday, October 27 for track 4.

Reflection Sheet

We encourage families to use the site: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/create/ to plan and
create routes as well as to determine mileage if a GPS watch is unavailable for tracking.
Students will develop critical thinking skills as they map out training routes, explore route
elevations, and think about proper pacing in relation to distance and hills.

Also, we encourage you to share your runner’s progress with the school community by
submitting any photos or comments under the OCE Facebook Family Marathon thread or by
sending in to their teachers for it to be shared. It’s always fun to know you aren’t alone in your
training journey!

Should you have any questions please contact Coach Carolin Roberts at croberts@wcpss.net

Yours truly,
The 2021 Family Marathon Team
