Principal's Message 8/7/20

Holly Ridge Elementary

Good Afternoon Holly Ridge Elementary families! As we are nearing the beginning of the school year, I know that you are anxious for information. I hope the information below is helpful to you.

Class Lists and Teacher Assignments

We received the information we needed this week to begin our work to create our class lists and teacher assignments. Our hope is to finalize this by early next week so teachers can start contacting parents to introduce themselves. Teachers will share specific information about their class and gather necessary information they will need.

As this year is so very different from our normal school opening, and we have a large portion of our students who will be attending the Virtual Academy, our scheduling will be impacted. Some of those impacts include:

  • While we will make every effort to maintain consistency for your child this year, please know that some changes may be necessary based on enrollment numbers, parents opting in or out of the virtual academy at mid-year, class size legislation, and other factors.
  • Keep in mind that we are allotted teachers based on enrollment. After our student headcount is completed, we could gain or lose teachers based on actual enrollment (not projections) and some classes may have to be reconfigured.
  • In addition, when students transition back into the building with their cohort group, they could possibly have another teacher at that grade level that would be providing face to face instruction and or remote instruction.

School Supplies

Supply lists have been modified and updated on our website.  In addition, WCPSS has purchased supplies to be distributed to students. We will be providing you with dates and times for a “drive through” event to distribute those supplies once they arrive on campus. More information will be provided to you soon.

Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

The WCPSS Technology Services Division is preparing devices for all students who requested one through the device needs survey at this time. When your device is ready, you will be contacted by the district three days prior to when your device will be ready. You will not be able to pick up your device until that date. If you need to edit your survey results, please let us know.  (Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites.)  The distribution date for the devices is scheduled for August 17. You will also be provided with information to support your use of the devices, and how to access additional help if needed.

Orientation to Virtual Learning

As the district has shared with you, the first two weeks of school will include opportunities for teachers and families to connect, as well as for students to connect with each other. Teachers will use this time to share schedules, set procedures and routines, and ensure every student knows how to access assignments and materials. Teachers will provide a good foundation to maximize your child’s ability to engage appropriately with each other and their work during this time. Daily schedule live instruction will not begin until August 31st.

Academic Work

You can expect academic work to start picking up the pace by August 31st and beyond. Please know that there will be much higher expectations in place for students than in place during the quick transition to remote learning at the end of last school year. Work will focus on covering standards the students missed at the end of last year, as well as new material for their current grade level. Attendance will be taken, and grades will be given. However, as we know that this type of learning is new for us, we will implement it in a way that will allow our students to grow into these new ways.

High Expectations for our Holly Ridge Labs in 2020-2021!

This year will be different than any other year. However, that does not mean it has to be less than any other year in terms of our children’s academic or social growth. Our teachers have already been working hard to be ready to support you and your children to have a fantastic school year.

Please enjoy your weekend, and we will be sharing more information next week!
