Sunday Night Announcements - Week of March 30th

     Hello Wonderful Wendell Families,

Here are the Sunday Night Announcements for the week of March 30th:

     Preparation for Online Learning

As you are probably aware by now, remote learning for students attending WCPSS traditional calendar schools (like WES) is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 13th.

Last week, you should have heard from your child(ren)'s classroom teacher(s), as they have been asked to assess the online capabilities and needs of their students.  If you haven't heard from your child(ren)'s teacher(s) yet, please reach out to them.  If you don't have contact information, please email me at jzellmer@wcpss.net and I'll forward your message.

This week, Ms. Armstrong and I will be virtually meeting with all of our teachers in order to continue planning for our remote learning launch.  WCPSS has provided a daily structure for remote learning that we will utilize here at WES.

Our two priorities:  First, to ensure consistency within grade levels in terms of instruction.  In other words, all 2nd grade teachers should deliver a similar experience for their students.  Secondly, we want to allow flexibility regarding student experience across grade levels... 5th grade and 1st grade remote learning should not be the same.

At this time, we are still mandated to follow our board-approved school calendar for 2019-2020.  This means that Spring Break is still scheduled for the week of April 6th-10th.  Although I'm sure that many of them will, I have shared with our teachers that there is no administrative expectation for them to work over Spring Break.

In closing, this is an unprecedented time filled with many uncertainties... Thank you for your patience and grace during this challenging time.  Remote learning will not be perfect, as undoubtedly many mistakes will be made from which we will learn and improve.  Please know that our first priority continues to be the academic and emotional well-being of each of our 519 students here at WES.

     WCPSS Updates

Please continue to use https://www.wcpss.net/coronavirus for district-level updates regarding COVID-19 and its impact on WCPSS.  The link to Wake County's new remote learning website is also included on this page.

     Upcoming Events

As I anticipate that many WES events will be rescheduled and few even cancelled, the "Upcoming Events" section has been temporarily removed from my Sunday Night Message.  Once a solid timeline for the district has been established, we'll take action to adjust things here at the school level.

     Field Trip Refunds

As mentioned in an earlier message from the Wake County Public School System, all field trips have been cancelled through June 30th.  A few things to know about this:

  - At WES, all grade levels have had a least one field trip cancelled.

  - Every refund will need to be hand-processed at school by verifying each homeroom teacher's receipt book.

  - After processing, each check will need to be signed by both the lead secretary and the principal.

  - The plan now is for checks to be mailed to the student address listed in Powerschool.  If your address is inaccurate or not current, you may not receive your refund check.  Please contact our data manager, Jennifer Villareal (jvillareal@wcpss.net) if you need to update your address.

Thanks for your patience as we work through this... At this time, I don't feel comfortable setting a timeframe for when all refunds will be processed.

I hope that you and your family are well and in good spirits.  Although I will continue to defer to WCPSS in terms of messaging, as WES-specific news becomes available, I will share with you directly.  Please email (jzellmer@wcpss.net) or call/text (919.374.0503) me as needed.

     Sincerely,

     Jack Zellmer
