Sunday Night Announcements - Week of March 16th
Hello Wonderful Wendell Families,
This edition of my Sunday Night Message will be unlike any other, as the situation in which we find ourselves is certainly unprecedented in my 20+ years in education.
I am pleased that action has been taken with regard to the health and safety of the students, staff and families of Wendell Elementary School. As you know, Wake County Public Schools are closed until at least March 27th in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like you, I have many more questions than answers at this point: How long might we be out? Will the school year be extended? What about making up lost instructional time? Will there be online/distance learning options? What can we do for students who rely on school for their meals?
In that spirit, all that I can offer you is what is known to me at this time... Here are the Sunday Night Announcements for the week of March 16th:
Building Open on Tuesday from 12:00pm-5:00pm
WCPSS leadership has directed all principals to open their buidlings on Tuesday, March 17th from the hours of 12:00pm to 5:00pm. The only purpose of opening WES on Tuesday afternoon is to give our families the opportunity to pick up any needed personal items, including student medicine.
Please come to the building on Tuesday afternoon only if it's truly necessary. As I haven't received direction regarding staffing that day, it may just be me there to help you.
As I anticipate that many WES events will be rescheduled and few even cancelled, the "Upcoming Events" section has been temporarily removed from my Sunday Night Message. Once a solid timeline for the district has been established, we'll take action to adjust things here at the school level.
Field Trip Refunds
As mentioned in Friday night's message from the Wake County Public School System, all field trips have been cancelled through June 30th. In light of the current situation, it my goal that all field trip refunds at WES will be completed by June 12th, which right now is scheduled to be the last day of school for students. A few things to know about this:
- At WES, all grade levels except 2nd grade have had a least one field trip cancelled.
- Every refund will need to be hand-processed at school by verifying each homeroom teacher's receipt book.
- After processing, each check will need to be signed by both the lead secretary and the principal.
- Checks will be mailed to the student address listed in Powerschool. If your address is inaccurate or not current, you may not receive your refund check. Please contact our data manager, Jennifer Villareal (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you need to update your address.
Thanks for your patience as we work through this time-consuming process.
Please continue to use https://www.wcpss.net/coronavirus for district-level updates regarding COVID-19 and its impact on WCPSS.
Stay healthy and take care of your loved ones. I'll reach back out during the week with any news specific to WES, but for the most part will let WCPSS handle the messaging. I do intend to send my next message as usual on Sunday, March 23rd.
