Summer Update 7/26/2020
Good afternoon East Garner Magnet Middle School Families, this is Jimmy Sposato, the proud principal of the Trojans reaching out with a summer update. Again, I welcome all of our 6th graders, or Year 1 students, to our community as well as any new 7th and 8th graders. If you are receiving this message and your child will not be attending East Garner Middle in the Fall, please contact the school at 919-662-2339 to update us on your plans. If you are hearing my voice for the first time then I welcome you to the East Garner Middle community. I will send these messages out weekly to keep you informed and engaged.
So there have been a few changes since we last chatted regarding the opening of school. The District announced Tuesday that it will delay bringing students back to campus under Plan B. Instead, all students will begin the school year in online instruction. The first two weeks of school for all students will focus on orientation and the distribution of supplies. We are not abandoning the return of students to the building but delaying it. Though we must do many things differently, we will vigorously and safely pursue our vision to foster a safe and equitable environment that values relationships, collaboration and high expectations developing lifelong learners, leaders (who are responsible global citizens). Details are outlined on page 5 of the Return-to-Campus Guide for Families. Due to the changes we are reworking our orientation plans and will announce dates and activities next week. We’re asking all families with a student in grades K-12 to complete this survey for each student, regardless of your school, whether you have applied to the Virtual Academy, whether you have a device or whether you need a device. (Pre-K students’ technology will be addressed separately by the Office of Early Learning.) This short survey will help us better understand the needs of our students and make sure that we are able to meet those needs.
All students will have a second opportunity to apply for the WCPSS Virtual Academy beginning tomorrow, July 27 through July 29. The application will close on July 29 at 5 p.m. If you have applied to the WCPSS Virtual Academy and would like to withdraw or change your application, please contact EGMMS directly, do not fill out a new application. Students will remain assigned to EGMMS. Families who apply must commit to at least one semester, with a recommendation of a one-year commitment.
We will hold a Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 1 from 12:00-2:00pm. At this is a drive thru event we will provide school supplies for school-age children, snacks and access to community services. To reserve your supplies please complete this RVSP: RSVP for Your Supplies. We have had over a 100 families already sign up. If you would like to donate supplies you can drop them off at the school or Contribute to the DonorsChoose Back to School Supply Drive. Information is available on our website.

APPLY ONLINE FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICED SCHOOL MEALS
WCPSS Child Nutrition Services wants families to know that they can apply online to qualify for free and reduced price school meals.
Families can go online to www.wcpss.net/meals to determine if their students qualify and to complete the online application. Families will find information about the application, frequently asked questions and the online application.
Families may also visit their school where paper applications will be available.
WCPSS Child Nutrition Services encourages parents to choose healthy and delicious school meals for their child.
