Summer Update 7/10/20

Good afternoon East Garner Magnet Middle School Families, this is Jimmy Sposato, the proud principal of the Trojans reaching out with a summer update. First of all I would like to welcome all of our 6th graders, or Year 1 students, to our community as well as any new 7th and 8th graders. If you are receiving this message and your child will not be attending East Garner Middle in the Fall, please contact the school at 919-662-2339 to update us on your plans and help your child get settled. If you are hearing my voice for the first time then I welcome you to the East Garner Middle community.

The WCPSS School Board has outlined what the opening of the 2020-2021 school year, which will be like no other. We must do many things differently. But that will not stop us from vigorously - and safely - pursuing our vision to prepare all students to reach their full potential and lead productive lives. We expect to start the school year using a blend of in-person instruction and online instruction (Plan B). In Plan B, students will be assigned to groups (1, 2 or 3). Siblings will be in the same groups. Groups will attend school in an ongoing rotation by attending school in person for one week and receiving online instruction for two weeks. Details are outlined on page 5 of the Return-to-Campus Guide for Families. Group assignments are pending. At this time, the governor has not yet made a specific recommendation about school calendars. We believe it is critical, however, that you and your child’s school have time to plan for the coming year. If the state requires additional calendar changes, we will let you know quickly so you can make necessary adjustments.

K-12 families have the option to choose the WCPSS Virtual Academy if they are not ready or able to return to a school campus. Students will remain assigned to EGMMS. Families who apply must commit to at least one semester, with a recommendation of a one-year commitment. The application form for the WCPSS Virtual Academy is open through 5 p.m., July 20. Deadline for Families to Decline Transportation Extended. The deadline for families to decline transportation service has been extended to Monday, July 13 at 5 p.m. If your student is enrolled, has a school assignment that provides for neighborhood or express school bus transportation, and wishes to use this service on a regular basis, go to Bus Rider Registration to apply.  You must do this each year. If your student is assigned to a bus and you are not planning for them to ride this year we ask that you complete this form to decline transportation. This will allow the system to create efficient routes and assign students to groups.

Share feedback on the experiences you and your child have had at our school by taking our short, online survey. The Title I office and our school will use your input to help us improve and plan for next year. The anonymous survey is available today through July 17 at
