Remote Learning Update 5/1/20

EGMMS Updates 5/1/20:

Good afternoon East Garner Magnet Middle School Families, this is Jimmy Sposato, the proud principal of the Trojans calling with your Remote update.

Next week, May 4-8 is Teacher Appreciation Week and we will be celebrating our teachers in very different ways this year. In years past, our school has held luncheons and planned other special events to let our educators know how much they mean to us. Now that school buildings are closed and our teachers are implementing remote learning, we are asking parents and students to consider celebrating this special week in some new and creative ways. Please consider participating in the following and have some fun!

Meaningful Monday - Send an e-card to your teacher expressing your appreciation and/or make a poster to show your teacher during your live sessions with teachers

Thankful Tuesday - Make a teacher smile or laugh with a picture or video message via Google Classroom or Talking Points. Include what makes you thankful for that teacher! Create a poster for your Tuesday classes to display during your live sessions with teachers

Witty Wednesday - send your teacher an email with your BEST joke! Dress up like your teacher for the live sessions.

Thoughtful Thursday - Sing praise, share an inspirational song with your teacher, you can sing it or send a video link! Send an email to your teacher telling them what makes them special.

Favorite Friday - Spread Love- use social media to give a positive shout-out to your child’s teacher describing your favorite thing about them. Send a video message to your teachers expressing your appreciation - be creative! You can post on social media with the hashtag #ThankAWCPSSTeacher.

High Five A Teacher -We know times are tight but if you can send a Five Dollar E-gift card to your teachers that would be great!  Many businesses allow you to purchase gift cards online and send them via email. Target, Amazon, and Walmart. Electronic gift cards for local restaurants are ideal as well.

As you are also probably aware, the State Board of Education approved an updated Statewide Grading Policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Middle school students will receive either a Pass - “PC19” - or a Withdrawal - “WC19” - for the final course grades. Math 1 will look a little different. Students will continue to have opportunities to improve their grades to passing during this remote learning window. As we get further clarity we will pass it on to you. I started us down one path that appears to be causing confusion instead of clarity. Until we have additional guidance from the State/System, teachers will no longer be updating Powerschools with 4th quarter content. Any assignment recorded already should be marked as “exempt” meaning it does not count towards the grade. Students will receive feedback through the platform (Google Classroom/Canvas) in which the assignment was delivered. Teachers will place work aimed at improving a grade from W to P into the 3rd quarter container. Contact us if you have questions. Grading Policy Update  -   https://www.wcpss.net/Page/42834

Please know we understand the struggle and trauma this pandemic is causing on families and we are trying to create an element of stability. We also know getting your kids to engage without sitting, literally on top of them, is both challenging and frustrating. We ask that do your best as parents as we are doing as educators in this new world. We will continue to tweak our practices, including grading, feedback and work load as we strive to make remote learning for all students. We sent out a survey requesting some feedback and you can access here as well.

Our Remote Learning webpage will continue to be our communication hub for the work students are doing at home and is designed to make the process predictable.

Chromebook Update: We do not have chromebooks at this time. We have requested additional devices and are not sure when they will arrive. Contact your grade-level administrator to have your name added to the list. We will contact you when they arrive.

Picking Up Items: We do not have plan for picking up items yet due to safety concerns. Please be patient.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer Program (P-EBT):

North Carolina approved the distribution of additional resources to families receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The additional benefits will be through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer Program (P-EBT) to help families buy food during the COVID-19 school closure. Learn more about the P-EBT program on the NC DHHS website. If families contact you with questions about this, please direct them to NC DHHS and notify your school social worker.

Applying for federal free or reduced price school meals:

We realize that many families’ economic and employment situations have changed during this pandemic. Families can apply at any time for free or reduced price lunch, which may also qualify them for other state and federal benefits. www.wcpss.net/meals

If you are needing any resources during this time please check out Wake Network of Care. It is an online one-stop resource directory which allows one to locate needed services and supports throughout Wake County:

Be safe. I miss you all!

EAST SIDE!
