Remote Learning Update - 4/17/20

Good afternoon East Garner Magnet Middle School Families, this is Jimmy Sposato, the proud principal of the Trojans calling with your Remote update. If you are needing any resources during this time please check out Wake Network of Care. It is an online one-stop resource directory which allows one to locate needed services and supports throughout Wake County:

We are one week into our remote learning adventure. There are growing pains, struggles and frustrations for everyone. Please know that the most important piece of this puzzle is for students to simply engage and to persevere. They are going to have to demonstrate some independence and grit. We will need your help with holding your kids to a high standard of participation and engagement. Our Remote Learning webpage is our communication hub for the work students are doing at home.  From our website, click on the green banner with the title Remote Learning Site. Contained on this page are links for all the teams and elective teachers. Students will select their team and then select each teacher to find out the assignments for the week and to obtain access information to Google Classroom or Canvas. Click on this link to see a brief demonstration- Demonstration. We have uploaded a schedule template for you to download to help create more clarity - Google Link, Word Document. Our goal is for this work to be clear, predictable and flexible. They will work with two core subjects and two electives each day. There will be three components to Remote Learning - work assigned for the kids to complete independently, live sessions with teachers for reteaching and teacher office hours for clarification. Most of the work will be completed on Google Classroom or Canvas. We have attached parent information about these platforms for your support.  Students will need to be logged into WakeID in order to participate in the Google Meet sessions. We recommend students attend the live sessions if possible as they are a great way to maintain structure in the day. They are designed to reinforce concepts and the independent assignments. Teachers have provided meeting access information in Google Classroom or Canvas

Looking for educational television to help your kids continue learning while away from school? UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction are expanding their educational programming for all students PreK through grade 12. Each weekday, students will have the opportunity to view quality programming on Rootle TV and  UNC-TV’s North Carolina Channel. More information Here

Grading Questions: A third quarter grade of pass (P) or incomplete (I) is being used as a placeholder since school was abruptly closed on March 14.  All students who were not passing on March 13 will have the opportunity to improve to a passing grade.  Our intent is that students will have opportunities to work to improve their 3rd quarter grade during this period of remote learning, if they so choose. Students should ask their teacher or teachers about their options for 3rd quarter grade recovery. In terms of 4th quarter, students should receive feedback on submitted work. Some of these grades will be recorded in Powerschools as a record of their participation but the grades will not be factored into a quarter average at this point. More info here

Registration Update: Please visit the EGMMS student services website for information on how to register for your school courses. I know there has been some confusion for world language enrollment. We are automatically enrolling students in world language based on their current course. Any changes will have to be approved. The only electives you may see on PS are for the exploratory electives that are only a single quarter. The website is Please view the registration videos for your rising grade level and register for your middle school courses in Powerschool.  Rising 8th graders will register for high school courses. Contact your grade level school counselors for questions.
