Welcome Letter from Principal Shane Barham
Dear Hunter Magnet Elementary School Community,
I am extremely excited to serve as the new principal of Hunter Gifted & Talented / AIG Basics Magnet Elementary School, the flagship magnet school in the Wake County Public School System. What an honor and privilege it will be to work with such a stellar school community who has a prominent history and legacy of student success! I look forward to leading in such a diverse, creative, and innovative school community!
Even though my start date at Hunter is ‘To Be Determined’, when I start, I am committed to leading Hunter through this pandemic and capitalizing on the solid foundation that has been laid these past few years. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to become not only the best magnet school in WCPSS, but the best magnet school in the nation. If we all work together to showcase our gifts and talents, this goal will be within our reach.
I am a proud product of the Wake County Public School System. I completed my undergraduate work at East Carolina University and graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am planning to return to school in the near future to work on my doctorate. I have worked in the WCPSS for the past 22 years. I have served as a teacher at Wendell GT Magnet Elementary School. I was the assistant principal of JW York Elementary School. I have been the principal of Rolesville Elementary School, Wendell Creative Arts & Science Magnet Elementary School, and Rogers Lane Elementary School. As principal, one of my schools was named the Top Magnet Elementary School in the Nation. Another one of my schools was a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School. I was named the Region 4 Magnet Principal of the Year and have been a finalist for the Wake County Principal of the Year. I am very fortunate that my educational journey is taking me to Hunter Magnet Elementary School.
I love the dynamics of a magnet school and believe in highlighting our theme in all we do. I value positive relationships with students, families, and the community at-large. I believe all students have gifts & talents, which should be showcased in a variety of ways. I promote personalized learning, where students have a voice and choice. I am committed to preparing our students to be agents of change, in order to make a lasting impact in our school community and the world.
I am thrilled about becoming a Hunter STAR and can’t wait to connect with our students, staff, parents, families, and community. In the coming weeks, I will set up informal virtual meetings which will allow me to connect with students, staff, and families, learn more about Hunter, and give everyone an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback about their vision for this new phase of our journey.
I am certain through collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication, we will continue to build upon the rich heritage, legacy, and diversity of the Lucille Hunter GT / AIG Basics Magnet Elementary School.
It’s Happening at Hunter! Sincerely,
