Principal's Weekly Message
Good evening Middle Creek High School families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the weather today and had a great weekend. We have a full 5-day week this week, and below are some reminders and calendar items to best keep you informed.
Information & Reminders:
Changes to Mask Guidance starting Monday, March 7th:
WCPSS following guidance from the NC DHHS has updated the mask guidance at school starting Monday, March 7th. The new guidance reflects that each individual has the option of whether to wear a mask. Some points of emphasis are provided below.
Masks are not required, and individual families are deciding on their own whether to continue masking or not.
Students should understand that this individual decision should be based on their own comfort and safety and may change from week to week, day to day, or even period to period based on the setting or other comfortability factors.
Students and staff are only required to wear masks when returning from a positive case of COVID-19 for days 6-10, or if they are experiencing symptoms.
Middle Creek is a cohesive and inclusive school community, and this situation is just one more way that we can show respect for each other’s individual opinions and personal decision. Regardless of your student’s choice starting Monday, we support it and value it.
If you have any questions, please know that you can reach out to any member of our administrative team or Student Services team at any time.
For Ninth Grade Parents Only: BIMAS-2 Screening
In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of all our students, we will be administering a universal screener of social, emotional & behavioral health to all 9th grade students this year. Our district is using the Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System-2 (BIMAS-2) research-based screening tool. We believe this will help all of our students thrive academically by identifying students who may benefit from additional social and emotional supports and interventions, much like some students benefit from additional academic supports and interventions.
This will not require you or your child to do anything. Your child’s second block teacher will complete a questionnaire about your child’s actions and emotions displayed in class during a one-week time span.
Examples of some of the questions include:
During the past week, this student shared what they were thinking about.
During the past week, this student had trouble paying attention.
During the past week, this student followed directions.
During the past week, this student acted sad or withdrawn.
For each question, the teacher will answer “never,” “rarely,” “sometimes,” “often,” or “very often.”
This information helps us to understand the needs of all our students and how we can best serve and support them. This will also provide us with data to help determine school-wide programs, interventions, and training needs for staff.
If you would like more information about the universal screener, please visit our website at www.wcpss.net/universalscreener.
Your 9th grade student will bring home an Opt-Out Letter on Tuesday, March 8 for you to look over. If you do not wish for your student to participate, please return the Opt-Out Letter to your student’s second block teacher by March 21.
Volunteers Needed for This Saturday!
We're in need of volunteers for our upcoming Winter Classic Guard and Percussion competition on Saturday March 12, 2022. This is a great opportunity for students who may need volunteer service hours, or community members who would like to be involved and help that day as we welcome 40 school groups from around the state as they perform/compete throughout the day in our main gym. Information from Student Services:
Junior Parent Night
Student Services will hold a virtual Junior Parent Night on March 23 in both English and Spanish for juniors and their parents. We will go over information about post-graduation planning that is currently being shared with juniors in their junior meetings. Links for these meetings will be on the MCHS website on the afternoon of 3/23. We look forward to logging in with all of our junior parents to discuss the important time of post-high school planning that starts now!
Senior Scholarship Recognition
We want to recognize the hard work of all of our seniors and the scholarship offers they have received! Please email a picture/pdf of the scholarship letter or award to Mrs. Mercado at firstname.lastname@example.org or have students stop by Student Services and we will make a copy of their letters. Even if a student received a scholarship offer to a school they are not attending we can include that in our scholarship total and recognition, so make sure to send in scholarship info today!
Career and College Promise Interest Meeting
The Career and College Promise Program allows eligible high school students to take classes at community colleges for free while they are enrolled in high school. This program is best suited for rising juniors and seniors and students must have a 2.8 unweighted GPA to participate. Students who are interested in taking a class at Wake Tech through CCP for the first time during the summer or fall of 2022 should sign up to attend the CCP Interest Meeting on March 11 during blocks 1 or 4.
