Greetings Middle Creek High School families,
I hope that all of our families have had another great week of remote learning. I am sharing a rather lengthy email with you all tonight, so thank you for your attention to all of this information.
Most of the news for this week’s email is for seniors, but there are some reminders and small pieces of information for grades 9-11 at the end as well.
Senior Class Celebration & Graduation Information:
Earlier this morning, Superintendent Moore and Board Chair Sutton shared with the community that we will be doing multiple things to celebrate our seniors. The first part of the plan is to celebrate our seniors with a virtual graduation program. Another part of our plan is to have a celebration at each school that will honor our seniors, provide for a celebratory distribution of diplomas, etc. Finally, the district has not ruled out a further celebration as a larger group in the summer or fall but that will depend on changes in state and local social distancing guidelines. Some details and specifics are provided below for both the virtual graduation program, and the individual on-site diploma ceremony.
The Middle Creek High School virtual graduation will be broadcast on June 12th at 12:00pm. This will include aspects of the traditional graduation program including student and principal speeches, the turning of tassels, and the calling of each senior’s name. Closer to the graduation broadcast date, we will share avenues to access the ceremony via the school website. It will also be available after that time if that’s more convenient for families and will be available for families to save the video.
As a part of the virtual graduation, each student will have a slide that shows their senior portrait, has their name, and also shares if they are an honor graduate and/or a NC Scholar. Students will have a brief opportunity to review their slide and suggest updates and to verify content. On May 18, students will receive an email to their WCPSS email account giving them access to an online portal to review their information. Specifically,
We will be using your senior portrait. If you choose to use another photo, you will need to log into the portal to make that change.
If you prefer not to have your photo / name used in the slideshow, please let your principal know.
The portal will open on May 20 at 8am and close on May 21 at 6pm. You will receive an email closer to the 20th with more information.
Middle Creek High School Diploma Recognition Event:
Because we know many students and families were looking forward to celebrating graduation with a walk across the stage, acceptance of diploma, and having their name read by school staff, we will be hosting an on-site diploma ceremony. Please save the date for June 9th and 10th! Exact time slots and group size specifications will be sent next week, but we are excited to celebrate this moment with you!
Additional Senior Information:
We had a great time distributing the personalized signs to all of our seniors yesterday and we hope that students enjoyed it! If you were not able to attend, you may visit the school on Tuesday, May 19th between 10-12pm. to pick your sign up. If you have already posted your sign or taken any creative pictures with it, please tag @mchsmustangs so that we can celebrate it with you!
We look forward to organizing a few more gestures and/or momentos before the end of the year so that the Class of 2020 can continue to feel our love and support.
Also, in case you didn’t catch the sign display on Saturday May 9th, here is a link to a recording of the route:
Senior Awards Ceremony:
Just a reminder: We will still be hosting our annual Senior Awards Night event on May 28th! This event will be virtual, and we look forward to celebrating some of the special awards that our Class of 2020 graduates have received. A link to view the event will be shared closer to the date.
If you are a family in need of support during this uncertain time, WCPSS may be able to help. There are a number of food distribution sites up and running in Wake County during this closure. If you need more information, or if you are looking for ways to help, please visit the link below for information.
Special Note: In observance of Memorial Day, food services will be canceled on Monday, May 25. Extra food will be distributed on Friday, May 22 for students and families for the holiday weekend. Most weekend food service sites will still operate on a normal schedule Memorial Day Weekend.
Drivers Eligibility Certificates:
Though the school will continue to be closed for the remainder of the school year, the district has approved a process for receiving Driver’s Eligibility Certificates in a safe way at each high school. After scheduling an appointment with the DMV, you will contact our Dean of Students, Ms. Gillespie at email@example.com to begin the DEC request process.
Remote Learning: Grading Reminders for students Grades 9-11:
Final grading guidelines for this semester have been released. Your child’s grade currently listed for the 3rd quarter is the lowest possible final grade they could receive in that course. Starting today, grades from remote learning will begin being entered into the Quarter 3 window of powerschool. There will be no official “Fourth Quarter” this school year, so please continue to check the Quarter 3 grade for your student’s semester 2 classes to keep up to date on their progress.
A reminder to all of our families, that in alignment to the state and district guidelines, remote learning grades will only be added to powerschool if it positively impacts the student’s overall course score. Every student still has the opportunity to complete remote learning assignments as an opportunity to raise their grade for the semester. We hope this encourages students to continue to participate as it not only benefits their understanding of the concepts for the course, but also has the ability to improve their grade without fear of any negative grade impact.
Additionally, as mentioned in previous communication, every 9th thru 11th grader will have the opportunity to choose the numeric or a Pass/WD grade for each of their classes this semester on an individual class basis. This option will be available after grades have been finalized on Thursday, June 4. Numeric grades will be factored into the GPA, while P/WD grades will not be factored into the GPA.
That concludes my updates and reminders for next week. Thank you for your attention to the many details.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing students next week!
