July 7, 2020

Hello, Zebulon Elementary Families,

This is Principal Newkirk with the update for the week of July 7, 2020

Hello ZES Families. I hope this first week of summer has been kind to you and your families. I will remain in contact with families throughout the summer at least until we have a concrete plan to address how schools will reopen in the fall.

Plan to Re-Open Schools

Last week the WCPSS Board of Education approved plans to return to school. You should have received information from the superintendent with lots of information about the plan and how you can prepare for the return to school.

The board approved plan B, in which a third of the students will come to school for instruction for a week while two thirds will remain at home for remote instruction. Each week another third of the students will come to school for face to face instruction. This will ensure that there is plenty of room for social distancing within the classroom and on the school buses.

The teachers will develop linear lesson plans to address the learning needs of the students at home for remote learning as well as those in the building. This way, students will not get behind because they are not in school. Attendance will be taken in school and for at home remote learning, therefore it is vital that students engage with the remote every day during the two weeks of remote learning before they come back to school.

We still have many details to iron out before school starts. As decisions are made, I will share that information with you. For now, students will be placed into three groups. One group will attend school for a week while the other two groups are engaged in remote learning. Parents of bus riders were sent a survey this week asking if your child would ride the bus again this year. It is important to complete this survey, as that information will be used to develop the groups to ensure social distancing on school buses.

Summer Building Hours

Our building is open Monday - Thursday during the summer for official business. We do work with a skeleton staff during the summer so please be patient if there are others in the building when you arrive. Our building will be open from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM Monday through Thursday.

Summer Feeding Schedule

Zebulon Elementary will continue to provide lunches free of charge to all children under 18 years old. Lunches will be distributed from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Parent Engagement Survey

We want to hear from you! Share feedback on the experiences you and your child have had at our school by taking our short, online survey. The Title I office and our school will use your input to help us improve and plan for next year.

The anonymous survey is available today through July 17 surveys.panoramaed.com/wakecounty/family. For more information on the survey, look out for a flyer in the mail.

Before and After School Interest Survey

Please complete this survey if you might be interested in before or after school care. We are still short of enough interest to sponsor a program. In order to host a program, I need at least 30 students enrolled to ensure there is money to pay the staff. If you are interested in staff supervised care to include homework time as well as enrichment, please complete this link. The cost for before school care is $81.13 from 6:30 AM until 8:00 AM. After school care runs from 3:15 PM until 6:00 PM at a cost of $148.73 per month.

Student Registration

Continue to encourage your friends and relatives to begin the process to register students for kindergarten and any other grade level. You can begin the process online at the link here or you may follow the link on the Zebulon Elementary website. Please email JoAnn Thomas to schedule a date to drop off documents at jthomas6@wcpss.net.

Have a great summer!!!

Yours,

David Newkirk, Principal
