September 6, 2019

Hello, Zebulon Elementary Families,

This is Principal Newkirk with the update for the week of September 6, 2019

Welcome back

I hope everyone faired Dorian without any major damage. I am grateful that the storm did not come too close to Zebulon or the surrounding areas. There was no damage to school facilities, and we are eager to get back to work. Students will return to school Monday morning for business as usual. Make-up days for the two days of missed school are November 1 and December 20. Both days will become student days.

New staff

Our new 5th grade teacher is set to begin Friday September 13. We are excited to have an experienced and accomplished educator join our instructional family. Our kindergarten teacher should begin either next Friday or the Friday after-

Open House

All parents are invited to our Open House Thursday September 12 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Our Open House is very different from Meet the Teacher. Parents will begin in the gym where I will share the state of the school and our most recent academic data. Then, parents will move to the classrooms where they will learn about the curriculum in the grade level, Capturing Kids Hearts and PBIS, and various strategies to ensure that your child will be academically and socially successful in school.

Parent Engagement

We understand that students and schools perform at a higher level when parents are engaged in the school. Zebulon Elementary has a parent engagement committee that plans several opportunities for parents to come to school and learn about the curriculum, instruction, and strategies to help your child. This year, we are adding student led conferences to our parent engagement menu. Throughout the year, students set goals and record their progress. That information will be recorded in a digital portfolio that students will share with parents at the student led conference. More information will come soon with the date for our first student led conference.

Elective Registration

Elective registration materials went home in the Wednesday folders this week. Please review, complete, and return these materials so we can begin building the elective schedule. Electives separate our school from all other schools in the area. Our students and teachers enjoy having some agency in their learning.

Beginning of Grade Testing

All third-grade students take the beginning of grade test during the first weeks of school. Last week, information was sent home explaining that testing would be September 10. The hurricane and missed days of school have forced us to push that date back to September 12. Please prepare your students for an extended testing session that may take two or more hours to complete. Many of our students know the content but lack the endurance and tenacity to stick with an academic task for that period of time.

Support Your School

There are lots of ways to support your school. Parents are welcome to register to volunteer in the library any day of the week. If you were a volunteer, you only need to update your registration. After October, you will need to register again and complete a full background check.

Another great way to support ZES is through joining the PTA. Our PTA consists of parents and teachers who are passionate about making Zebulon Elementary the best it can be.
