May 17

Hello, Zebulon Elementary Families,

This is Principal Newkirk with the update for the week of May 24, 2019

End of the School Year

End of grade testing begins on May 29. This test is an opportunity for students to demonstrate how much they have learned. It is also used to measure teacher and school effectiveness. Although I understand that there is more to an education than performance on a single test given at the end of the year, I also understand that the community judges the quality of our schools based on those very EOG scores. For these reasons, I challenge all of our parents to speak with your child about doing his/her best, reading every passage, solving every math problem, and taking the test seriously.

ZES Successes

Zebulon GT Magnet Elementary School has many successes to celebrate this school year!Students in grades 3-5 take the NCCheckins the first three quarters. Student scores improved significantly each quarter, demonstrating student growth. Our end of year mclass data is complete and our students have improved reading proficiency from beginning of the year to end of year. According to mclass composite scores, 72% of all students are reading at grade level. We continue to work to make that percentage even higher, but I want to acknowledge the growth we have made this year.

Student Registration

During the month of May I spend much of my time planning for the beginning of the next school year. Resources are allocated based on estimated student membership. The more students enrolled, the more teachers and resources provided. Please encourage your neighbors to register their rising kindergarten students. We also need students who move into the area to register as soon as possible to allow me time to hire teachers for all classes.

Summer Reading

The best strategy for maintaining academic skills over the summer is to read. For this summer, I challenge every student to read 30 books over the summer. Students may check out books at any library. Students may document their reading at https://www.scholastic.com/summer/home/ . Students will need to register before documenting their time.

Kick off to Kindergarten

Marbles Kids Museum is hosting a kickoff to kindergarten event Saturday August 17 from 9 AM – 5PM. Students will get the opportunity to practice standing in line in the cafeteria, get moving at recess, exploring circle time, and even ride a bus. This event is free for rising kindergarteners.
