August 12, 2019
Greetings Smith Families and Students,
We have missed you! We hope you have had a wonderful summer, have spent time reading and are ready to come back to school! Our talented staff has been busy planning for the 2019-2020 school year and we are eager to continue our partnership with families as we work together to help our students grow and learn.
In preparation for the 2019-2020 school year, please review the following important information:
Meet the Teacher for students in Grades 1-5 will be Thursday August 22 from 6:00pm-7:30pm. At that time you will be able to meet your child’s teacher, get carpool tags or bus information, put money on your child’s lunch account, and join the PTA. We encourage all parents to register to be a volunteer. Computers will be set up in each classroom for registration. Remember, even if you have registered in the past, you still have to renew each year. Kindergarten families are welcome to come, however, their teacher assignments will not be available at that time.
The first day of school for students in Grades 1-5 will be Monday August 26. Students may enter the building at 8:45 and are considered tardy after 9:15. Breakfast is provided free of charge to all students. The school day ends at 3:45. Kindergarten students have been assigned a staggered entry day during that week. If you have questions about your staggered entry date, please contact Sharron Gibson at 919-662-2358.
Lunch Information - Applications for Free/Reduced price Meal Benefits can be done on-line at www.MySchoolApps.com . Paper copies will be available in the front office. Applications must be resubmitted each year. The cost of lunch this school year will be $2.75
Meet the Teacher for Kindergarten students will be Friday, September 30 from 11:00am -1:00pm. The first day of school for all Kindergarten students will be Tuesday, September 3.
Bus Routes -Transportation will post bus route information by August 16th. This information can be found on the WCPSS website by clicking on the transportation icon. We will also have staff available at the August 22nd Meet the Teacher event for any bus questions you may have. Please be patient the first few weeks of school as bus routes are adjusted and finalized.
Carpool Tags - Tags will be available at both Meet the Teacher events as well as through the office the first few weeks of school. Carpool drop off begins at 8:45. If you need to check your student out early, we request that you do so prior to 3:15. Please be patient the first couple of weeks in the carpool area, there may be longer wait times as students learn their numbers and the carpool routines.
Home Base/Parent Portal - We are encouraging all parents to sign up for Home Base/Parent Portal. This is a communication tool that allows you to see your child’s bus information and attendance, as well as verify contact information. Home Base will also enable you to see your child’s next school assignment in the spring. WCPSS Office of Student Assignment does not anticipate sending home assignment strips this year, so the “next school” information in the Parent Portal will be very important. Here is a link to the WCPSS website and the forms you need to sign up for Home Base. https://www.wcpss.net/Domain/69 If you prefer, you are welcome to pick up the required forms in our front office.
School Messenger - We send out weekly updates via school messenger. You can choose which phone numbers receive phone calls or text messages. If you'd like to customize the type of communications you'd like to receive on your phone or email, visit http://go.schoolmessenger.com and create an account. You can also download the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. For support, download our flier or contact our school.
We are excited about our journey this year as we explore “Pathways to Excellence” for our students and we are looking forward to a wonderful year!
