The students in Running Club are learning about running and exercise techniques as they strengthen their leadership habits. We begin Running Club by warming up our bodies. It’s important to stretch and prepare the body for a long workout (Habit 2: Put First Things First). Our runners have also learned about pacing and that you can’t treat every race like a sprint. It’s important to know when to save energy and when to run your heart out. Running faster than your opponents won’t help if you don’t build endurance (Habit 3: Begin with the End in Mind). One of our favorite activities is splitting into teams to run relay races. The runners learn to work together to decide which order they should run (Habit 6: Synergize), that it's important to give their all for the sake of their team (Habit 1: Be Proactive), and how to be flexible with group sizes when the club isn’t easily divisible (Habit 4: Think Win-Win). Most importantly, students who haven’t considered or running (or walking) as a way to release energy or recharge are learning to enjoy it for fun regardless of their level of skill (Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw).
