Books at the Bus Stop
In order to prevent the “summer slide” and to build relationships with families, a number of teachers and staff members from AB Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School volunteered a bit of their summer time to Books at the Bus Stop. Before school let out last June, Courtney Clark, Learning Coach, and Angie Headley, Librarian, along with Combs’ PTA, gathered new and gently used books to be able to give away all summer long. They chose three bus stops in the school’s base neighborhoods and met with the students, sent out postcards, and made phone calls to these families telling them to “Meet us at the Bus Stop” every Monday morning, all summer long! Teachers took books, popsicles, the prize box, and blankets and headed off to the bus stops to meet with Combs’ Gators each week. Staff would read with students, engage in conversation about their lives, give them a cold treat, and tell them how much they have missed them. Students walked away with a few new books for their own shelves and a reminder to come back next week. They also encouraged the students to attend Athens Drive Community Library’s summer reading program on Tuesday afternoon by reminding them and attending as well. While the intention of this and the program was to provide time to read and access to books for students who may be missing that in the summer, the bigger outcome was in the relationship building that occurred and the connections being made with families and community.
