New principal begins at Poe

August 5, 2020

Dear Poe Magnet Elementary School Community,

I am honored that the WCPSS Board of Education has appointed me as the new principal of Poe GT/AIG Basics Magnet Elementary School and grateful for the opportunity to be part of Poe’s rich legacy. I am eager to meet all Poe students and families and begin the 2020-21 school year together. I assure you that I share Poe’s mission, vision and beliefs and will work diligently with every Poe staff member to provide authentic and meaningful educational experiences that foster academic, physical, social, emotional, and artistic growth for all students. As a parent of two children enrolled in the Wake County Public School System, I have traveled this remote learning journey with many of you. I know, now more than ever, parents and guardians need support and up-to-date information as soon as it becomes available. As the new Poe principal, I will clearly communicate expectations, support all teachers and staff members, and maintain a commitment to provide high-quality instruction for all students enrolled in the Virtual Academy or in Plan B Transition.

The 2020-21 school year marks my 25th year in education. My educational career began after earning a BS degree in Business Administration and realizing my true calling was teaching. I returned to school and obtained a K-6 teaching license and began teaching 3rd grade in a rural Title 1 school in Laurinburg, NC. In 1999, I moved to Raleigh and joined the Wake County Public School System as a 4th grade teacher at Conn Elementary Magnet School. During my twenty years at Conn, I served in a variety of roles including 4th/5th Grade Teacher, Instructional Resource Teacher (IRT), Magnet Coordinator, School Improvement Chairperson, and most recently Assistant Principal. I have had the fortunate opportunity of leading the Conn staff and community through two magnet theme changes and understand the intricacies of working in a magnet school. Believe me, magnet school staff members work harder than any other! While it will be sad leaving my Conn family, I am ready to move into the Poe Elementary learning community. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our two sons, and little beagle, Cosmo!

Having researched all things Poe, two things stand out the most; staff members’ dedication to learning and teaching and their love for all students! This is obvious from state and district survey data, continued improvements in academic achievement (two years in a row exceeding growth!) and the wonderful accolades displayed across social media. I knew immediately that my collaborative leadership style would fit the positive Poe culture where all staff members share ideas that support student achievement. I believe all students can succeed when provided rich and equitable learning opportunities and look forward to continuing and supporting the work the Poe staff has already begun around strengthening core instruction, enhancing MTSS structures, and building the Conscience Discipline framework. I am committed to enhancing the family/community/school partnership and have invested a lot of time and energy throughout my career in building strong relationships with parents and guardians. I am an active participate in all PTA meetings and look forward to engaging with students and families in community events.

I am excited to serve as the next principal at Poe Elementary beginning August 10. I will definitely “hit the ground running” and anticipate setting up virtual Meet and Greet opportunities during my first month for you to learn more about me and Poe’s plans for Virtual Academy and Plan B Transitional students. Again, I look forward to the new school year and serving as the new Poe Elementary principal. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email at cstory1@wcpss.net. While I will be finishing my assistant principal duties at Conn Elementary this week, I will be in communication with Poe’s interim principal, Dr. Kearney, to begin the administrative transition. I look forward to joining you soon.
