PTA Letter to Parents
DRMS Families-
I hope that your student has had a great start to the 2015-2016 school year! For those of you who have 6th graders who have just made the jump into Middle School, I am also hopeful that it’s been a smooth transition for them and for you as parents! No more concerns about how to open their lockers, no worries about changing classrooms and meeting new friends. They are now old pros at these things!
As we head towards fall and all of the fun activities ahead, I want to share with you what your PTA has been doing as we get the school year going.
The beginning of the school year is when we need to focus on fundraising. The money we raise now dictates what we can fund and support all year long! I hope you were able to support our GoPlaySave fundraiser. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year and its success is a major factor in our determining if we can fund the activities and events we want to support. If your student is on Tracks 1 & 2, please make sure that they have turned in their orders, or has returned the GoPlaySave book if they did not sell it. Tracks 3 & 4 still have this week to sell. There are daily drawings for gift certificates for any student who sells five or more books. If your student sold 15 or more books, he/she will go into a drawing for a gift certificate to Great Wolf Lodge!
We are also beginning a fun contest to turn in Box Tops. For those of you who are not familiar with Box Tops, they are on many General Mills products. This free program called Box Tops For Education gives our school 10 cents for each Box Top turned in. That may not sound like much, but Durant Road Middle School has earned close to $10,000 since the program’s inception! The contest is called, “It’s not for PRIZE, it’s for PRIDE!” and has each grade vying for the top Box Tops claim! Home rooms classes who also meet a minimum amount will be placed in a drawing for a breakfast party. Have your student turn their Box Tops weekly so we can update the challenge.
If you haven’t joined our PTA, please consider doing so! It costs $8.00 per member. Our goal is have 600 members this year! If you are not able or interested in volunteering at our school, we would still very much appreciate your financial support. The PTA form is on the DRMS website under Parents and then PTA.
One of our students’ and teachers’ favorite Spirit Night events is coming up on September 15th. It’s McTeacher Night at McDonalds! This fun night is when our teachers “work” at McDonalds and 25% of the proceeds from this evening go to our school. It’s a lot of fun for our kids to see their teachers there! Please mark your calendar and come out and support DRMS this evening!
If you haven’t been to our school lately, please come by and see the major improvements we made to the front entrance. DRMS Volunteers in conjunction with our community partners at Refuge Church built two flowerbeds and cleaned up the entire area. This is our first Beautification Project of the year. We will have another one and will be asking for volunteers.
Speaking of volunteers, if you would like to volunteer at our school, please be sure to update your WCPSS background check. You can come into the office and do this very quickly. This is something everyone must do annually. If you’d like to be added to any of our Volunteer lists (Beautification Projects, Hospitality Committee, Helping out in the Media Center, Spirit Wear/School Store and many more!) Please fill out the volunteer sheet on the PTA forms page and send it to Nicole Hucke at nhucke@gmail.com.
We look forward to a great year for our kids, and are eager to ensure that our PTA does a great job supporting our school. Thank you all for your continued support! We could not do it without you!
