DRMS Principal's Message
Hello, this is Kristen Faircloth, principal at Durant Road Middle School, with your weekly message.
Thank you to all of the Dolphin families who donated books during the WAKE Up and Read campaign. DRMS collected and donated 717 books that will be donated to children, schools and facilities across Wake County in need. Thank you to Amy Myers, media specialists, for leading us. Way to go Dolphins!
Softball and boys soccer tryouts have taken place. Congratulations to the 13 seventh and eighth grade girls who made the 2018-2019 DRMS Softball Team and to the 19 seventh and eighth grade boys who made the 2018-2019 DRMS Boys Soccer Team! Track & Field tryouts will take place on Monday, February 25 - Wednesday, February 27 after school. We are looking forward to cheering on our spring athletes this year.
Congratulations to three of our DRMS Student Visual Artists: Cynae L., Jussef P., & Nicholas P. In late January, their artworks were entered in the 2018-2019 Arts Festival of The Woman's Club of Raleigh and Junior Woman's Club of Raleigh. The Arts Festival is billed as the largest Arts recognition program for young people in North Carolina and is in its 50th year. Students in Grades 6-8 participated in crafts, visual arts and photography. Cynae was award first place in the crafts category: Mosaics. Nicholas and Jussef were awarded first and second place in the craft category: Weaving. We are proud of you Dolphins!
YOU ARE INVITED!
Our second Family Academy / School Dance is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2019 from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM! Parents & guardians are invited to attend an informational session focused on "Keeping Children Emotionally and Physically Safe" in the Learning Commons (media center) while their children are dancing the night away in the cafeteria. The concession stand will be open and Kona Ice will be outside in the bus lot for the students to purchase items and enjoy. Tickets for the dance will be on sale all week from 7:45 AM - 8:10 AM in the cafeteria during breakfast.
Spring Pictures will be taken on Thursday, March 7, 2019 for Dolphins on tracks 3 & 4. All students will be photographed during the PE classes. No payment is necessary on picture day. Proofs will be sent home 3 to 4 weeks after the designated picture date. Spring sports pictures are scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, 2019 after school.
Volunteers Needed!!
We have deemed all early release days as College & Career Ready Days. As part of our College & Career Ready Days, 8th grade/Tracks 3 & 4 will be participating in The Reality of Money on Friday, March 8. Reality of Money is a financial simulation that is sponsored by SECU. This event provides students an opportunity to make financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation, and other monthly expenses as they are "transformed" into young adults with jobs and other responsibilities to manage. Students are exposed to various financial learning points such as the value of furthering their education, the importance of saving, the limiting effect of bad credit, and "living within their means". In order for this event to be successful, we need volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with training and all materials upon arrival for the event. No experience is required. Parents, grandparents, business community-all are welcome to volunteer. Please go to the following link to sign up:

Our second annual SPLASH DASH Color Run is just around the corner! Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help fund technology upgrades throughout our school. We hope to purchase new laptops and install monitors in the classrooms which are greatly needed for instruction. Tracks 1 & 3 SPLASH DASH is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2019 and Tracks 2 & 4 SPLASH DASH is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, 2019. Please help us reach our goal and improve your child's school and learning.
Thank you for supporting DRMS,
Kristen Faircloth
