Mustang News for January 17, 2021
We have officially completed half of the school year as our 1st Semester ended on Friday. Second Semester begins on Wednesday and students are to follow their new schedules, including any changes in core teachers. As a reminder, Martin is closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. Tuesday is a teacher workday. Additionally, all students will learn remotely from January 20th through mid-February. We will communicate the return to in person learning as soon as we have that information.
We will not be mailing report cards this quarter and we ask all families to check PowerSchool on Friday for the final 2nd quarter grades. Families are encouraged to monitor both PowerSchools and Google Classroom and/or Canvas on a regular basis.
Third quarter supply pick up was last week. Please contact your grade level counselor, grade level administrator or Ms. Bullock, our receptionist, if you were unable to pick up materials last week to let us know when you will come by Martin to pick up materials.
First Semester Feedback: We would like to collect feedback from students and families regarding 1st Semester learning. Students are asked to complete a survey specific to their 1st semester experiences. Families are asked to complete a survey specific to their 1st semester experiences.

Mustangs Unite: By now, everyone has heard about our school wide Mustangs Unite PTA Mural Project! This cultural arts program offers a great way for students to connect with our community in the midst of remote learning. Students received their mural kits at supply pick up and have access to online virtual instructions from our artists (for more information check out the PTA Google Slides). The final mural will be a mosaic of every student’s artwork and will be displayed in the main hall at school. Make sure your student is included by mailing back his or her artwork by Wednesday, January 20th. We’re all looking forward to seeing the mural come together!
Third Quarter Google Classroom Codes: Students should check their WCPSS email and Google Classroom this weekend for invitations to join their 3rd quarter Google Classrooms. Core class codes are the same as last semester, unless your student had a teacher change. Students can email teachers if they did not receive invitations.
Jazz 2: Do you have dance experience at Martin (or somewhere else)? There are open spots in our Jaz II Elective. This course extends and develops technical and stylistic skills; emphasis will be to expand the dance vocabulary of movement and to extend rhythmic and technical precision. Please reach out to Ms. Lowder or your grade level counselor if you are interested in taking this class.
Yearbook: The yearbook staff would love to have 3 photos of each student. If you have not already submitted photos, please choose from the following categories and send photos to jthomas5@wcpss.net, or you may use this link.
- Your Daily Schedule...walking the dog, playing sports, cooking, reading, goofing off with friends, playing outside
- You in Your Favorite...t-shirt, pajamas, comfy athletic wear, hat/cap
- You and Your Tribe...photos with a family member, your BFF, or your pet
Athletics Updates: Because we will continue in remote learning through mid-February, our athletics program is on hold. Mr. Basladu is working with the WCPSS Athletics Department on a revised schedule. Details about requirements for participation can be found here. Please note that, for this year, 6th grade students will be able to participate in athletics whenever possible. For additional questions, please contact Mr. Basaldu at jbasaldu@wcpss.net.
Sixth Grade Stampede: The 6th Grade Stampede will have a 3rd Quarter Corral this week during Enrichment. The meet code will be emailed to students this week.
Second Semester Bus Riders: All families with students assigned transportation for the second semester received an email and text via SchoolMessenger on Thursday with information about health and safety procedures. Bus route information and attestation form status will be emailed on Friday. All students riding school transportation must have completed Bus Attestations Forms on file. Additionally, all students are to be screened at home, prior to boarding the bus. All students will be screened once they arrive on campus.
From the PTA:

And a Thank You...You really know how to show your support with snacks! We collected LOTS of goodies during school supply pick-up yesterday to restock the staff lounge throughout the next quarter. Thanks so much to all who donated!
