Mr. Corey's Weekly Message - 2/14/25

CONNmunity!  Here is your weekly Principal Message.  Please read to the end as there is a lot of important information below.

Celebrations

Great things are happening at Conn ES and this week proves it, yet again!!!

This week our kindergartners had a successful field trip to Marbles and collaborated with the NCSU Society of Women Engineers.  Seeds have been planted in this class and we can’t wait to see the type of Stem/Engineering minds that our kinders will have in 5th grade (2029-2030 school year).

Our Conn PTA Advocacy Committee presented a robust, engaging, and action-oriented CONNversation Night: Money Talks on this past Wednesday, February 12. Public school advocate Susan Book presented School Funding 101 and Wake County School Board District 4 Member Toshiba Rice answered questions.  Students from the Student Leadership Team presented to Board Member Toshiba Rice and also fielded questions to Principal Corey and Ms. Rice.  It was a wonderful night!

Our Black History Wax Museum on Friday, 2/14, was a success, with a total of 602 visitors in the building!!! This engaging student experience incorporated literacy, math, science, history/social studies, science, and the arts with oral presentation skills.  It was enriching to see our students engaging with family and strangers in their learning.

Our NC State STEM night occurred this week as well.  We are appreciative of the college students giving up their time to work on STEM activities with our students.

The Conn Cougar Run Club had its first meeting this past Wednesday, 2/12.  Although the weather was rainy, we were able to host it inside the building and the students (K-5) enjoyed running and exercising.  Thank you to the PTA, parent volunteers, and staff volunteers who helped make our kickoff successful.

Thank you to the PTA for helping us celebrate National Bus Driver Apprecation Week!  We appreciate our bus drivers and everything they do to ensure our students arrive at school and back home safely every day.

Way to go! 🎉🙌

Dance @ Ligon MS

Ms. Taylor Harrison, the dance teacher at Ligon Middle, welcomes incoming 6th grade students who are interestsed in dancing in the program next year.  Ligon Dance Placement Auditions are underway.  Like last year, Ms. Taylor is hosting a virtual audition for all incoming 6th grade students.

This website link - https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/ligondanceplacementauditions?usp=sharing - includes all the details on how to complete the placement auditions and how to submit them.

Tips from Ms. Taylor:
  • Parents, free to help out and prepare your students wherever you see fit - just as a reminder we should only see the student dancing in their audition videos.
  • All audition videos must be emailed to me by Friday February 21st - tdharrison@wcpss.net
  • Here is also a one pager of all the dance classes that will be offered next year at Ligon - Ligon Dance Offerings
  • If you have a student that does not want to audition but is still interested in taking dance, there are plenty of options available for them. Students can sign up with their counselors for any level I or dance elective class.
  • Students can sign up for level II classes ONLY if they complete a placement audition and receive a recommendation from me.
  • All level III and performance company classes will not be open for registration, but our counselors will put them in classes based off of my recommendations from auditions.

Chorus @ Ligon MS

Is your rising 6th grader interested in chorus and attending Ligon MS?

Please review the Ligon GT Chorus Placement Audition Information link

YES, there are two dates to keep in mind for families.

1. If the student knows they are attending Ligon next year as a neighborhood/base student, the due date is February 21st.

2. If the student does not know yet due to the Magnet Application process, the due date is on or before March 19th.
