Conn Weekly Update 11/13
Greetings Conn Families,
This is Gary Duvall Principal of Conn Magnet Elementary and here are your weekly announcements for the week of Nov. 13.
Literacy Night - We would like to invite all of our families to a night of fun and excitement during our annual Literacy Night. This will take place this Thursday, November 17th starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m. This year our theme is “Wild Wild West” and all families are encouraged to wear your best outfit to match the occasion. We will have a variety of different activities to do in each classroom along with guest readers. Also, dinner will be provided for everyone who attends. We hope you will join us for a great night of fun!
Conn Book Fair - The Book Fair is here! Your child will have 2 chances to visit the fair during school next week. Each class will have a preview day where students fill out wish lists. Students who bring money will go back for a shopping day later next week. If you write a check, it MUST be for the exact about. All book fair sales are tax free! Teachers will also fill out wish lists. Please consider buying a book to enhance classroom libraries. Please join us for our Family Times Tues, Nov 14 7:30-9am and Thurs, Nov 16 from 4-7pm alongside Literacy Night. Parents are also welcome to shop during the week. Books make great gifts! Thanks in advance to all the volunteers who make the fair a success each year. And thank you for all the generous donations for One for Books. We will still be accepting donations throughout the fair. We look forward to seeing our Conn Community in the media center this week!
Chess Club Opportunity - Conn has an opportunity to start a Chess Club through Triangle Chess. Triangle Chess offers a curriculum based program that runs for 9 weeks. The cost is $110 per child with a 10 child minimum needed to get the classes started. Each child will be provided a book and given classroom instruction as well as practice time in each class. This club could meet either before school or after school and the classes would meet once per week for an hour and fifteen minutes. Chess sets will be provided by Triangle Chess and we are looking to potentially offer this opportunity in January if we have enough interest. Please contact Mr. Duvall via email if you are interested.
Connucopia - Now that is is fall, finally colder, and November it is time for the annual CONNucopia! The food drive begins Monday and goes throughout the week. Students can bring in canned and boxed food items to their classroom. There is a collection box in each classroom. Each day the number of items is counted for each room and will be announced on CFN each morning. The classroom with the most items at the end of the week will receive a prize! The food collected directly benefits our school so bring in those cans!
Fitness Friday - Starting in November, Conn PTA will be hosting Fit Fridays: a casual park-and-walk meet-up for magnet or carpool families, or any Conn
families who would like to do a short walk to school together. Families can park at the Oakwood Park and then walk children to Conn (the walk
is just under a half a mile). We hope to have a special teacher or staff member join us each week for the walk. PTA will be helping with the meet-ups through the first Friday in December. After that, we hope everyone will be in the "Fit Friday" habit and will keep up the routine! EVENT DETAILS: Future Dates: 11/17 - 12/1 - Meeting times will be from 8:20-8:35 AM: Meet at Oakwood Park (910 Brookside Drive) then at 8:40 AM: Walk to Conn.
