Apex Friendship Elementary School, opening August 2022

August 5, 2022

Building Status

Furniture and Instructional materials are now being installed.  Administration and Office staff will be moving in very soon. Staff will be able to report to the building a few days prior to the first official workday.  With only a few exceptions for PTA preparations, members of the community are not permitted on campus until Open House on August 26, 2022.

Community Event Reminder and Sign-Up

You are invited to come to the Apex Nature Park from 5:00-7:00pm on Thursday, August 11.  We will meet at the picnic shelter by the amphitheater.  This is an informal time for Apex Friendship Elementary families to get to know each other.  Students are more than welcome to use the facilities to play, but parents/guardians must remain on site.  Students are encouraged to bring frisbees and/or balls. The PTA is providing popsicles, and some members of the school staff will also be present.  Mayor Jacques Gilbert will be there to welcome WCPSS and Apex’s newest school community.

Please sign up so that we know how many people to expect.

School Based Transportation Survey Submit by August 10

Please provide the information in this Transportation Survey to help us with preparations for arrival and dismissal procedures.  We understand that situations may arise where you might need to change your child's transportation for a day.  Answer the following questions in terms of how your child(ren) will arrive and depart (both AM and PM) the building the majority of school days.  Please complete by Wednesday, August 10th.

I anticipate sharing a traffic flow map soon when we know more about how students will arrive and depart each day.

AFES Parent/Student Handbook

I hope that you will find this handbook helpful as we begin our new school year.  Items will be added and revised as needed so please keep the link throughout the school year

Student Supplies

We ask that you please bring student supplies to Open House on August 26 or September 2 (Kindergarten).  This will make it easier for students to arrive at school on the first day with less to carry.  If you are unable to attend Open House, please send supplies a few at a time in student bookbags.  Students do not need everything from the list on the first day, just as you are able.

First Day of School Information and Parent Visitors

Please use the Open House event to enjoy touring the school and taking pictures with your child.  Due to the lack of parking and security in the building, you will not be permitted to walk with your child to their class on the first day of school.  We will have many adults in the building and will make sure students get where they need to go.  Curriculum Night will be held in September which will allow you to visit the school again.

What can you do now to help your child?

Between Open House and the First Day of School, help your child memorize their carpool number found on the carpool tag!  This will greatly support a smooth dismissal!

Keep transportation consistent as much as possible.  This creates stability for students.

Talk with your child about lunch.  Students should be able to open food items independently as much as possible.

COVID Coordinator and Procedures

Mrs. Tara Yunker, Assistant Principal, serves as our COVID Coordinator.  You are required to report positive cases to Mrs. Yunker at tyunker@wcpss.net when school starts.  Masks are recommended, but not required.

Reminders:

PTA General Meeting

There will be a general meeting on August 16th at 6pm in the Apex Friendship Middle School Media Center.  Please come out and attend to hear more about the PTA efforts for the coming year and to review and approve the budget.

Staggered Entry Notifications

Kindergarten families should have received an email with a confirmation of your staggered entry date.  If you did not receive the email please contact Mrs. Yunker (tyunker@wcpss.net).  The sign-up link is no longer active.  If you have a registered kindergarten student, and you did not sign up, a day was assigned for your child.

Open House for all grades except Kindergarten

Friday, August 26, 2022

8:30-10:30 am - Last Names A-L

4:00-6:00 pm - Last Names M-Z

This event is informal.  You may arrive at any time during the window.  You will receive an email from your child’s teacher on the morning of August 26 by 7am.  When you arrive on campus, you may report to your child’s classroom.  We will have many staff members and signage to support with directions.  PTA will be present as well.

While we would like for families to attend during their assigned time to support traffic patterns and crowding, we understand that some families may need to attend at the other time to fit their individual needs.

Open House for Kindergarten

Friday, September 2, 2022

10am-12pm

Similar to the event on August 26, teachers will send an email to families on the morning of September 2, 2022.  Families can report to their child’s Kindergarten Class.  Parents can come anytime during the window.  There is no formal presentation.

Traffic during Open Houses

We have approximately 90 parking spaces for staff behind the tower.  We have about the same number of staff members, so parking is going to be limited.

There are no events happening at the other schools on our campus on August 26.  You will be able to park in the student lot at the high school and walk to the school.  We will have a few spaces in front of the school for those who need a space close to the building.

Kindergarten Parents- September 2 is a school day.  Please walk to the school or plan to park on the side of the drive around the back of the school.  Parking may be difficult so plan accordingly.

Bus Transportation

The deadline for First Day Bus Service has passed.  You should still submit your requests, but service won’t be available on the first day of school.

Everyone in need of bus service for the coming school year should navigate to the websites below and request bus transportation. You will need your child’s Student ID number to register.  If you don’t have it or have a rising Kindergartener and don’t have the number, call the school during the hours of 9:00am to 3:00pm and we can provide it over the phone.  You can also email amiddleton@wcpss.net.

Angie Middleton, Data Manager

* Please direct all questions about enrollment and paperwork to Mrs. Middleton.

* Have you enrolled in AFES, but your plans have changed?  If you are not coming to AFES for the 2022-2023 school year, please contact Mrs. Middleton at

amiddleton@wcpss.net or call 919-694-8454 and ask to speak with Mrs. Middleton.  We need you to fill out withdrawal forms.  Thank you!

Student Attendance and Enrollment

Students who do not attend school in the first 20 days will be withdrawn per state policy on Day 21.  This could have significant consequences.  If you are traveling and not planning to be present on the first day of school, your child must attend school by the 20th day on September 27, 2022.  Students who are withdrawn must be re-enrolled upon your return to school.   Please note that schools are funded based on student enrollment on Day 20, so every single student counts!  If 30 students don’t show up, we could lose teaching positions!

Free/Reduced Price Meal Information

WCPSS needs you to complete a 2022-2023 meal benefits application for next year. If you have not completed a free or reduced-price meal application and think your child may be eligible, pick up an application at your child’s school or apply online. Paper applications can also be requested by calling 919-588-3535 or 919-856-2920 or emailing cnsmealbenefits@wcpss.net.

Before/After School

The Kraft Family YMCA is excited to offer Before and After School programs on-site at Apex Friendship Elementary school.
