Dear Turner Creek Families,

Happy Friday.  What a beautiful week it has been in Cary, North Carolina!  We had so much fun at our LetterLand Parades (linked) on September 9 and 16.  The whole school joined in as our Kindergartners celebrated learning all of the Letterland characters.

A huge thank you to the Track 3 and 4 families who joined us for our Open House Night last week and completed the BINGO board.  Congratulations to Shantanu D. on Track 4 and Lilly M. on Track 3 for being the winners of our drawing.  Please email Kristie Davis at kdavis@wcpss.net your t-shirt size and she will get a shirt to you!

We all have the opportunity to support our PTA by ordering dinner from Marco’s Pizza on Monday September 19 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.  Please make sure you show the flyer so we get credit for your purchase!  Marcos Pizza on Kelly Road will donate 20% of the sales to our PTA.  Flyer Linked Here

If you need anything at all, you can reply to this email or email me directly at ksmall@wcpss.net

Nominate an Out of this World Educator (Linked)

As a community, we have to come together to show appreciation for the work our educators do each day.  I will always let you know about opportunities to lift up our teachers when they come up.  Please consider nominating one of our outstanding educators at Turner Creek for this award.

Military-connected families complete this form as soon as possible.

Are you a military-connected family?

In an effort to ensure that the unique needs of military-connected students are met, state law requires that schools collect information on military-connected students. The goal is to help accommodate these students by providing them with support and consistency when their parents are deployed, when they are transitioning between schools, and at other pivotal times during their academic career.

If you are a military-connected family, please:

  • Download the linked fillable form.

  • Complete one form for each of your children.

  • Return to the school data manager who emailed this form to you.

  • The deadline is Nov. 11. You may also print and return a hard copy of the form to your child’s school if you prefer.

New Crosswalk Sign (linked)

In August, a student riding a bicycle was nearly struck by a vehicle as they both turned into the carpool lane from Turner Creek Road.  Thankfully, the student was unhurt, but it was a scary situation for the student, the driver, and everyone else who witnessed it.

I am so proud of the efforts of our community members, our PTA, and the team of Wake County Public Schools staff we worked with to assess the situation and ultimately improve safety on our campus.  If you visited campus today, you will have seen our new crosswalk sign as you pulled into carpool.  This sign will slow traffic down and alert drivers to take extra care.

I’m grateful for your continued support in keeping everyone safe.

Walk and Roll to School Event on October 12, 2022 (flyer linked)

Mark your calendars!  We will be celebrating Walk and Roll to School Day this year.  Communities celebrate Walk & Roll to School Day for a variety of reasons, but safety is always at the core. This year, we will use this event to promote the importance of walking and rolling safety for the entire community.  More information will follow in the upcoming weeks.

Donating a book is a very special way to honor your child while promoting a love of reading and supporting the Turner Creek Media Center. If you would like to participate in this program, you can fill out this online form.

Our BackPack Buddies is designed to provide children experiencing food insecurity with nutritious, kid-friendly, pre-packed meals for the weekend and track outs—when they would not have access to a school’s free lunch and breakfast. If your family is in need of food support, please send an email to jhawkins@wcpss.net saying that you are interested, your child's name, and the number of children under the age of 18 in your household. We will send home a permission form with your student and food home on Fridays.

Positivity Project

Please see below for more information on the Character Strengths students will be learning about at school in the upcoming weeks.

Creativity

Creativity means you come up with new and original ways to think about and do things.

Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences, and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They generate lots of different ideas and can pursue them with energy and enthusiasm.

Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you share your original ideas with the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.

On a group level, creativity is vital. It helps us solve seemingly impossible problems, create something we never knew we wanted, or simply see the world in a new way. Technological examples include the printing press, refrigeration, electricity, automobiles, and the internet. Just think of what we’d be missing without Renaissance art, Enlightenment thinking, Harlem Renaissance jazz, or hip-hop emerging from the South Bronx in the 1970s and 80s.

To practice and encourage the character strength of creativity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Integrity

Integrity means you are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Integrity is vital to individual growth. It is correlated with a multitude of psychological well-being measures. Harmony in your feelings, thoughts, and actions makes you better able to personally grow and achieve goals. Authenticity and a lack of pretense make you more likable and trusted by others, meaning your relationships will benefit.

To practice and encourage the character strength of integrity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Staff’s Favorite Things (Linked)

I ask staff to share their favorite things so we can show them we care throughout the year.

2022-2023 Caregiver/Student Handbook (Linked)

Please bookmark our handbook.  It will be a “first stop” as you have questions about the everyday operations at Turner Creek.  This handbook will always be in “draft” form as we are in a world where change is the new norm.  I hope it will be a good resource for you and your family.
