September 2, 2022

Dear Turner Creek Families,

Happy Early Release Friday!  I hope you all have a safe and relaxing long weekend.

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday September 6.  We have our Open House Event for Tracks 3 & 4 on Thursday September 8 from 6-7:30 pm.  We will have a food and ice cream truck.  Please come meet our teachers and staff and learn how to support students at home this school year.  I hope to see you all there!

Next Friday we are also looking forward to a visit from author and illustrator Peter Brown for our our Kindergarten through Third grade students.  Creepy Pair of Underwear! Is a favorite bedtime story in my house.  I can’t wait to meet the author!  Be sure to ask your child about this exciting opportunity next weekend.   A huge thank you to Ms. Powell, our media specialist, for setting this up for our school.

If you need anything at all, you can reply to this email or email me directly at

Updated 2022-2023 Year-Round Calendar

**New Announcements**

Update on Playground Equipment at Turner Creek

Our playground equipment is inspected annually.  A serious safety issue was identified with the clatter bridge this year.  The county immediately closed the playground.  I am in communication with the department facilitating the repairs.  They will update me on the status of the repair as they are able.  This department is understaffed and they do not have an estimate of when it will be repaired.

Review transportation code of conduct

A transportation code of conduct has been established to promote safe and orderly rides and to support drivers in addressing inappropriate student behavior. Please review rider expectations with your student.

The following steps will be taken to address any infractions:

  • First infraction - The driver will discuss any “rider expectations” infractions with the student and document the discussion with the student.

  • Second infraction - The driver will discuss the infraction with the student and document the discussion with the student. Transportation will send a letter to the parent describing the infraction.

  • Third infraction - Transportation will make a referral to the principal for intervention.

Political Activity on WCPSS Property

WCPSS encourages its employees and community to participate in our political process in order to ensure their voices are heard and interests reflected in local, state and federal laws and policies. Learn more about the laws and policies that regulate political activities on school campuses.

Positivity Project

Please see below for more information on the Character Strengths students will be learning about at school in the upcoming weeks.

Knowing my words and actions affect others

Everything that you say and do can affect others -- and your relationships with them.

Everything we do, say, text, tweet, snap, or post can positively or negatively impact other people. Our words and our actions are our choices to make, but they can have ripple effects long after we make them. Words and actions have the power to lift others up or tear them down, but, our words and actions also impact ourselves. When a group is comprised of individuals who are thoughtful about their words and actions -- individuals who show respect and consideration for the people around them -- we’re likely to have a happier and healthier culture.

Self Control

Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control can limit impulsive behavior. They are able to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised. Self-control does not mean a lack of thoughts, feelings, or impulses; it just means you have command over them.

A group’s ability to demonstrate self-control often appears in the form of “self-monitoring.” This means the individuals demonstrate honesty with one another about successful group practices. When things are unsuccessful, group members can adjust roles in the interest of overall group success.

To practice and encourage the character strength of self-control with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Staff’s Favorite Things (Linked)

I ask staff to share their favorite things so we can show them we care throughout the year.

2022-2023 Caregiver/Student Handbook (Linked)

Please bookmark our handbook.  It will be a “first stop” as you have questions about the everyday operations at Turner Creek.  This handbook will always be in “draft” form as we are in a world where change is the new norm.  I hope it will be a good resource for you and your family.
