Dear Turner Creek Families,
We have had a wonderful start to the 22-23 school year. Thank you to everyone who came to Meet the Teacher this week. It was wonderful to see students and their families. This year, the principal's messages will come to your inbox every other Friday. I hope these messages will help you keep up with the great things happening at Turner Creek. Another way to keep up with us is by following us on Twitter. Each staff member has a Twitter handle. You can follow our school’s account at @TurnerCreekES.
The summer months are hot in North Carolina. In order to keep students safe outdoors, we follow guidelines from the Wake County Health Department. Our staff checks the “feels like” temperatures to determine when they can go outside for recess. If the temperature is 90 to 94 degrees, classes can go outside for 20- minutes. If the temperature is 95 degrees or higher, classes can go out for 20 minutes before 11:30 am and cannot go outside at all after 11:30 am.
Remember, our school is 250 students smaller this year. This means carpool dismissal will end much earlier. The latest time you should be in line to pick students up is 4:00 pm.
If you need anything at all, you can reply to this email or email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
Early release days are returning this year. Please mark your calendars!
The “Care Plan” at Turner Creek
At Turner Creek we:
Take care of ourselves.
Take care of each other.
Take care of our place.
This week, students been learning what it means to “take care.” We will be sending “care plan” magnets to each family next week. You can support us by talking about “taking care” at home.
This week and next week our school community is focusing on the Other People Mindset. This means anything that builds relationships is going to make you happy.
The mission of the Positivity Project is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships by understanding, appreciating, and exemplifying the character strengths in us all. People who have strong positive relationships do five things consistently - these are the five practices of the Other People Mindset. 1. Recognize the good in other people, 2. Recognize that everything you say or do affects other people, 3. Support others when they struggle, 4. Cheer people on when they succeed, 5. Remain present when giving people your attention. People who have a strong Other People Mindset are able to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with others.
While mental health is incredibly complex, we do know that positive relationships can help people become happier, healthier, and more resilient. And, the Positivity Project believes that educators have a huge opportunity and vital role to play in this endeavor. Our nation’s youth spends a large percentage of their time in school. By deliberately and consistently teaching students that relationships are important -- and that positive relationships are cultivated through character and the Other People Mindset -- educators can roll back these trends and create strong citizens and leaders for our communities and countries.

Here Comes the Bus App Information
Please be on the lookout for a county update regarding the Here Comes the Bus application. We expect the application to be up and running by Monday morning. To access the 2022-23 Here Comes the Bus application, please click this link. Our school's number is: 67500
Breakfast and Lunch are no longer free
Sign up for Free and Reduced Lunch
It is very important for eligible parents to complete a meal benefits application because this data enables schools to obtain funding to provide other important educational resources to benefit students. Other benefits that are issued directly to families that have applied and are eligible for meal benefits may also be available (such as the P-EBT cash benefit). Meal benefits applications for the 2022-23 school year are available online at myschoolapps.com. www.wcpss.net/free-reduced-meals.
Visitors and Volunteers
Caregivers who want to visit during lunch will be able to eat lunch with their own child at the picnic tables outside the cafeteria. We ask that families do not visit during lunch for the first 3 weeks of school. This will allow students and staff time to adjust to new routines. Teachers will begin reaching out for volunteers as needed after the first 3 weeks of school.
I ask staff to share their favorite things so we can show them we care throughout the year.
Please bookmark our handbook. It will be a “first stop” as you have questions about the everyday operations at Turner Creek. This handbook will always be in “draft” form as we are in a world where change is the new norm. I hope it will be a good resource for you and your family.
