April 8, 2022

Dear Turner Creek Families,

I hope you all have had a wonderful week.  There are many important updates in this week’s newsletter, including an update to our year-round calendar for the 21-22 school year.  Please take time to read it thoroughly.

This week we celebrated our Assistant Principals!   We are so fortunate to have Jen Hawkins and Kelsey Tunstall as our assistant principals.  So much of what they do is not obvious, but they have an impact on students, staff, and families every day.

It was also National Library Week.  Thank you Ms. Thompson for all you do to make Turner Creek’s library a place where all students can find the joy of reading.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month to Heather Muller!  Thank you for all you do for our students and families.

Please remember that End-of-grade testing for students in third, fourth, and fifth grade is always scheduled for the last 10 days of the school year for your child's track. Please do not plan any family trips or unnecessary absences during this window.

Please remember that if you need anything at all, you can reply to this email or email me directly at ksmall@wcpss.net

2021-2022 Caregiver/Student Handbook (Linked)

Please bookmark our handbook for the upcoming school year.  It will be a “first stop” as you have questions about the everyday operations at Turner Creek.  This handbook will always be in “draft” form as we are in a current world where change is the new norm.  I hope it will be a good resource for you and your family.

**New Announcements**

Family Engagement Survey

Please take a few minutes to complete this year's family engagement survey between April 4th and May 6th. The survey will ask parents/guardians questions about the quality of the school environment, how well your child’s school communicates with families, whether your school actively encourages family involvement, and similar topics.

The data gathered in this survey will help schools make improvements in all of these areas, so we strongly encourage you to participate. We will ask that a parent or guardian complete one survey for each WCPSS school that your children attend. Click here for more information.

Important Remediation and Re-administration Update

This school year, WCPSS is conducting district wide End of Grade (EOG) re-administration for students in grades 3-5.  What was formerly the last two days of school will now be used for remediation and retesting for students that qualify in grades 3-5.  These remediation days will no longer be regular school days for the 21-22 school year.

Therefore the following dates are the NEW dates for the last day of school for ALL students:

~Track 1 Last Day of School for Regular Instruction for PreK-5: Thursday, June 2nd, 2022

~Tracks 2, 3, 4 Last Day of School for Regular Instruction for PreK-5: Monday, June 27th, 2022

Only students in grades 3-5 who qualify for retesting AND choose to participate will be attending school on June 3rd and 6th for Track 1 and June 28th and 29th for Tracks 2, 3, & 4. You will be contacted by the school directly if you are eligible for retesting AND if you have opted in to test by clicking here. You must complete the form by April 22 if you want your child to be considered for this opportunity.  If you have NOT been contacted about your child being eligible for a retest, your child should not be on campus on the readministration days. If your family has a unique situation on these newly repurposed school days, such that this adjustment creates a situation where you need support, please contact our school counselor(s).

PTA School Improvement Project Updates

Playground Sunshades

The sunshade on the K-2 playground was damaged by a storm in August. The PTA funded the playground sunshades when they were installed back in 2007, so we filed a storm damage insurance claim which was eventually approved for $10,000. We have ordered replacement sunshades for both playgrounds, although it will be several months before the shades are manufactured and installed.

Water-Bottle Filling Stations

We have installed two touchless water-bottle filling stations, thanks to donations from Bovenizer & Baker Orthodontics and Carolina Orthodontics & Children's Dentistry. We were approved for a grant from the Arthur Ashley Williams Foundation (AAWF) that will cover two additional stations, and are in the process of procuring those.

Outdoor Learning Space

The remainder of the AAWF grant will be used towards an outdoor learning space. We are in the early stages of that project, and have engaged a project management firm to help us develop the concept and master plan for that space.

Continue to check your bus status online

Transportation staffing levels continue to be affected by the impacts of COVID-19 this week. Due to a driver shortage, we encourage families to check the status of your child’s bus daily at Turner Creek Bus Updates. In addition, you can track your child’s bus using the Here Comes the Bus app. Due to the unpredictable nature of pandemics, and the increased infections caused by the Omicron variant, we do not know how much longer service will be disrupted.
