Return to Headlines

March 25, 2022

Dear Turner Creek Families,

We are entering a phase of pandemic recovery where health and safety updates and changes to policies and procedures have slowed.  Because of this, we can move to less frequent principal communications.  I will plan to send messages every other Friday moving forward.

Last week, I was able to attend our singing Tree Frogs’ performance at Meymandi Concert Hall.  Mary Michael and all of her dedicated performers are such a gift to our community.  The concert was an experience I will not forget and I know our students and families feel the same way.

Our 5th graders began the process of registering for elective classes in Middle School.  This is such an exciting time for these students.  Reach out to Jessica Bowers if you have any questions about this process.

Please remember that if you need anything at all, you can reply to this email or email me directly at

2021-2022 Caregiver/Student Handbook (Linked)

Please bookmark our handbook for the upcoming school year.  It will be a “first stop” as you have questions about the everyday operations at Turner Creek.  This handbook will always be in “draft” form as we are in a current world where change is the new norm.  I hope it will be a good resource for you and your family.

Track Assignments

As most of you know, Turner Creek is an overflow school for Olive Chapel Elementary.  With the opening of Apex Friendship Elementary School, Olive Chapel is currently in the process of calling back families who attend Turner Creek but are on the waitlist to return to Olive Chapel.  Families of over 200 of our students will be contacted in the upcoming weeks by Olive Chapel to be given the opportunity to return to their base school.  Please note, not all families currently overflowed to us will be contacted and offered a seat at Olive Chapel.  The student’s position on their waitlist and the number of available seats will determine which families are contacted.  We currently have 920 students at Turner Creek.  Next year, we expect to have closer to 800 students so planning for next year is a very detailed and complicated task as we prepare for a decline in our student population.

Several of our virtual academy families, as well as all of our new families, are waiting to find out their track assignment and we have a number of families who have requested a track change for the 22-23 school year.  We are holding off on this process until our Olive Chapel Base families have decided to remain at Turner Creek or return to Olive Chapel.

Families who have requested a track change should expect to hear the results of that request by April 15.

Families of  new students (including incoming Kindergarten) should expect to be notified of their track assignment by May 1.  Incoming Kindergarten students who have a sibling currently attending Turner Creek have already been assigned to the same track as the sibling.

We appreciate your patience.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

EOG Dates - Reminder (linked)

I wanted to remind everyone of these important dates.  Please do not make plans for the days your child is scheduled for End of Grade tests. You can support your child on these days by helping them get enough sleep the night before.  As always, school breakfast is free for all students.  You might encourage your child to eat breakfast on the morning of their test to keep them fueled and focused.

Continue to check your bus status online

Transportation staffing levels continue to be affected by the impacts of COVID-19 this week. Due to a driver shortage, we encourage families to check the status of your child’s bus daily at Turner Creek Bus Updates. In addition, you can track your child’s bus using the Here Comes the Bus app. Due to the unpredictable nature of pandemics, and the increased infections caused by the Omicron variant, we do not know how much longer service will be disrupted.
