Principal's Message September 11, 2020
Hello Falcon Families! Happy Friday after this short week that seemed to fly by! Typically I feel these short weeks drag on, but not this week, it flew by! Hope everyone had a great week. As always, lots of updates to share with you.
Schedules
Last week, I shared with you feedback on the families' survey that was sent out to NFP families. The biggest concern indicated on our NFP survey was the schedule and the amount of screen time for their children. Well, this feedback, along with others in our community, indicates the need to consider potential changes to the schedule norms. Specifically, needs include more teacher planning time, mitigating the current volume of work, and time and space to prepare for students returning to the school building. The district is working through a process of seeking additional feedback from schools, teachers, and others to inform this conversation. Stay tuned, as we get more information, I will be the first to relay that information to you!
Istation Meeting Reminder:
Istation Reminder for Sept 15 at 5:30 by joining the Google meet with this link: https://meet.google.com/ziu-sgmo-yeu. Testing for students will take place the week of September 21. This meet will explain how your student will access the Istation ISIP assessment at home, how to download the Istation App, if needed, and directions for logging your child into the application. As per the Read to Achieve legislation, ISIP is a formative/diagnostic benchmark assessment that is state mandated and must be given three times a year to assess reading skills.
Student Expectations
As we continue with the online learning, maintaining engagement and participation is important! Our teachers are trying many things to keep students engaged. Although we can't require the student to have their picture up all day, every day, we do expect them to participate when called on to check for understanding. If a student does not respond (either verbally or in the chat), and we can't see them, our assumption is the student is no longer there and we do not want them to miss out on the instruction. Of course, we understand the need for breaks at times, and we are not referencing that. Also, we have students that are not completing and submitting assignments into Google Classroom. For teachers to accurately gauge their students' understanding and to offer meaningful feedback, we need the students to submit their assignments and be active participants in their online learning.
Best Practices to Help Families be Good Partners in Education During Remote Learning!
-
Be mindful that the online classroom is in fact a classroom and not the appropriate time to engage or add comments during the teachers’ instructional time with the class. Also, please be mindful that if the mic is unmuted, the class may hear family conversations in the background. Unfortunately our classes have overheard adult conversations in the background, some including inappropriate language, so please be mindful of that.
-
Remember that school is a safe space for students to demonstrate their understanding so teachers are able to identify areas of weakness in order to differentiate instruction to strengthen students' skill set.
-
If you want to discuss your child's progress with his/her teacher, please respectfully request an appointment via email or by calling the school at 919-570-2220 and the message will get to your child's teacher.
-
PLEASE, do not interrupt, engage, or interact with the teacher during "live" instruction. Remember, schedule an appointment to talk to the teacher or possibly "practice" time would be more appropriate.
-
Assist your child with their work as needed, but PLEASE do not complete or supply answers. Again, we are a safe place for students to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
-
If you are wanting to follow-up on whether you child is completing and turning in their assignments, then please make sure you have your child's teacher add you to the guardian email summaries within Google Classroom. You will be notified about upcoming assignments and if assignments are missing. To read more about the guardian email summaries, please check out this link: https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6386354?hl=en
Free Breakfast and Lunch for ALL Students

The curbside meal service will operate Monday through Friday from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Students will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost! No student ID number required to receive meals. (***This is an update from previous emails I haven sent out)
September 29 and 30 Remote Learning Days
In May 2020, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction added five required days of remote instruction to the 2020-21 calendar year. This addition was originally intended for the practice of remote instruction and was made a requirement for all school districts. Now, schools will prepare asynchronous instructional activities (in other words, there are NO live sessions on September 29 or 30, all pre-recorded lessons and assignments will be posted in the Google classroom for students to completed) for students on the 5 Remote Learning days that will follow the student’s instructional schedule. Students will be counted present on Remote Learning days by submitting an assignment.

Staying Connected,
Amy Light, Principal
