Weekly Message for 1.17.2020

General Announcements

As part of WCPSS Vision 2020 Strategic Plan, Moore Square focuses on preparing students to be successful in college, in the workforce, and as productive citizens in our community. To meet that goal, students must develop their knowledge in reading, math, science and other subjects. To assess our students progress in ELA and Math, we will participate in a mid-year “benchmark” this week. The assessment will give our teachers valuable information about where students are in their learning journey. Teachers will use this information, along with the work the students have completed this year, to determine areas where additional support may be helpful to support and enrich learning.

The benchmark assessment will not impact your student’s report card or academic standing in any way. The results will help the teachers in their planning for instruction for the remainder of the year. More information about these mid-year benchmark assessments can be found on the WCPSS website at www.wcpss.net/domain/2340.  You may contact your child’s teacher if you have any further questions.

If students own a graphing calculator, they are encouraged to bring them to school for the math benchmark. A calculator function in built into the assessment platform and one will be available for student use, but we do encourage students to bring theirs from home. Cell phone calculators will not be permitted during the benchmark.

Attention Carpool Parents! A few reminders about morning and afternoon carpool. Students are not to be dropped off or picked up on Person, Martin or Bloodworth Streets. Students are to be picked up and dropped off on Davie Street. We have noticed since we returned from break students getting in an out of cards on Person, Martin and Bloodworth. This slows down our carpool flow and puts student safety at risk. Additionally, the leaders of the churches that surround our school have asked that parents not park in their lots to wait on afternoon dismissal. Members of their congregations are not able to access their churches due to our parents filling their lots. We ask that you assist us in being good neighbors.

Our school's Presidential Elections were held this week.  Congratulations to our new president Salla Jallow and Vice Presidents Ayden Welton and Chris Hill!

The National Geographic Bee will be held during first period in the Media Center January 28, 2020. Ten contestants from three different grade levels will compete for the National Geographic School Champion title.

Pennies for Pasta is around the corner!  Keep your loose change ready, as our homerooms all throughout the month of February will be competing to donate the most to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to fundraise for cancer research.

Parents, we are continuing to collect books for our “Honor Library” available to our students located outside the Media Center. This collection of books is available for students to take a book for a day or for forever! Mrs. Skinner would appreciate gently read donations that may be cluttering up your bookshelves.

Yearbooks are on sale now for $45. Order at jostens/yearbooks.com or call 1-877-767-5217.

8th grade parents, now is the time to purchase ads in the yearbook. These are a great way to celebrate your child and your child's growth over the years.

Go to jostensadservice.com to purchase and design your advertisement. This is only available for 8th graders. Deadline for ad submissions is 2/13/20.

Counseling and Student Services News

As we move deep into winter please be reminded about returning to school from illness. If your student has a fever, is vomiting, or has gastric distress today, they should not be in school tomorrow. If you must give your student Tylenol or Motrin for a fever today, they should not be in school tomorrow. Giving medicine to “get through the day” means that your student should stay home. Please help us keep the flu at bay.

In order to help reinforce ROAR behaviors, we will select target behaviors to focus on for a week. For the week of January 20th-24th, the focus will be on Achieving Your Goals in all areas.  Please make sure to work on achieving your goals and showing a positive growth mindset this week.

Parents we are hosting a Family Academy on Tuesday, February 4th from 6:00-7:30. Dinner will be served at 5:30 (slice of pizza, fruit side, and cookie). The purpose of the Family Academy program is to provide families with the necessary academic tools to support the success of their child’s education and to bring schools, parents/guardians, families, and community organizations together as equal partners. The topics are Transitioning to High School and Teaching Your Child How to Deal with Peer Pressure (2 separate topics).

Please see the link for more information and to register to attend.  https://bit.ly/3ahTWwg

Also, mark your calendars for our 4th Quarter Family Academy on March 31st. The topics are helping Your Child Reduce Test Stress and Preparing Your Child for the End of Grade (EOG) Tests.

As a reminder, the Magnet Application window closes on January 30th so something to keep in mind as we look toward next year. I've included some relevant links for which schools are MagnetMagnet Themes, the Application Process and where to Apply. They can also be found on the Counseling Weebly. If for whatever reason you do not end up getting your desired school, the Request for School Transfer Window (NOT a Magnet or Early College) for a school other than your base is Feb 21 - Mar 6.

For any High School Application related questions, please contact Mr. Wray (mwray@wcpss.net). Have a wonderful weekend!

We have placed a basket in the main office for absence notes. Notes sent from home for students being absent should include the student's first and last name, dates of absences, reason for the absence, and a signature with the parent's first and last name along with the date of the note. Also, please be reminded that notes are due within 2 days of the student's return. Please do not email notes to Mrs. Harrington. Thank you for your cooperation!

Parents please remind students to sign in in the front office upon arrival if they are arriving after the bell. Students are marked absent unless they sign in.
