Weekly Message for 8.16.19

Happy weekend, Moore Square!

General Announcements

We are thrilled to be recognized by Magnet Schools of America as both a Certified Magnet School and a Magnet Demonstration School. The application process was arduous, but it allowed us to highlight the amazing work done as an entire school community. We appreciate the support of all Moore Square stakeholders in providing our students with a top-notch educational experience.

North Carolina law requires that all 7th grade students must have the Tdap and Meningococcal immunizations within the first 30 days of the school year.  Your child can receive these immunizations at their regular doctor or at your local Wake County Human Services location.  Please bring a printed record to the school as proof that your student received these vaccinations.  If you have any questions, please call the school. Students without documentation on file of required vaccines will be excluded from school beginning August 26th.

All parents are encouraged to register as a volunteer. It only takes a few minutes at school and registration is required for parents to attend field trips and volunteer in classrooms, the media center and the office. Before too long, teachers will be asking for support to deliver the robust programs that Moore Square has for students. As a reminder, volunteer registration must be done each year and you can connect your name to more than one school. So, the next time you are at school, ask Ms. Scott at the front office about registering.

Parents please consider sharing your career and career journey on the morning of September 27th for our Career Day.  Exposing students to a variety of careers and occupations helps students make connections between school and work and the careers they can have after school.  Please share your journey and broaden our students’ horizons.

More information and registration can be found here. Please contact our CDC, Wendy Gressett at or by calling the main office at 919.664.5737 with any questions.

Ms. Skinner has created a wish list for the Media Center. Please consider supporting Ms. Skinner by visiting the Media Center page on our website.

Moore Square is seeking new mentors for students this year. The mentoring program connects adults with students to support not just academic development but navigating the challenges of early adolescence and social/emotional learning. Mentors meet with mentees on a weekly or every other week basis for 30-45 minutes during the school day. If interested in mentoring a Moore Square student, please contact Marla Mondora at 919.664.5737 or No experience is necessary.

Fall Sports Tryouts

Tryouts at Ligon will begin on August 27th from 2:30-4:30. Fall sports include Football, Volleyball, Girls Soccer and Cheerleading.  Each student will need to have a current sports physical on file to tryout.  There will be a bus to transport students to Ligon at the end of the school day. Students will need to be picked up at Ligon at 4:30. See Mr. Scheck if you have any questions.

Future Moore Square Art Project--Collecting Materials Now

We are planning for another mosaic--this time using plastic bottle caps. In preparation for this, we are asking families to collect plastic bottle caps and send them to school with your child. Examples of what to send are water and juice bottle caps, milk jug caps, or any flat plastic caps. Caps can be up to several inches in diameter, but smaller caps are preferable. We anticipate the need for a variety of colors, though a design for the mosaic has not been determined. Students are encouraged to place their bottle caps in bins in the cafeteria as well, and in the lobby. Students may bring bottle caps to Ms. Hardy, Magnet Coordinator in room 1123.

Counseling and Student Services News

For families with elementary or high school students on a traditional calendar, Sanderson High School is hosting Free Back to School Haircuts on Monday, August 19th, and Thursday, August 22nd from 9am-2pm

In order to help reinforce ROAR behaviors, we will select target behaviors to focus on for a week. For the week of August 19th-23rd, the focus will be on Achieving Your Goals in all areas. Please make sure to work on achieving your goals and showing a growth mindset this week.

8th graders: Do you like helping others solve problems and resolve their conflicts? If so, being a Peer Mediator may just be for you. Eighth graders who become peer mediators get trained in peaceful conflict resolution. You can get an application from the counselors or click on the link. Applications are due on Monday, August 26th.

A note from the school social worker - Please remember that absences add up quickly! Missing just two days per month is considered being chronically absent. Attendance letters are sent home after 6 unexcused absences. If you have any questions regarding attendance policy or questions about your student's attendance please contact your school social worker, Ashley Davis, at Attendance law and policy information can be found here:
